Upgraded to windows 7: built in mic doesn't work

Hello,

I have a dell XPS M1530 laptop and have recently upgraded to windows 7. Unfortunately I discovered today that the built in mic no longer seems to work. Is anyone else having this problem? If so has any1 found a solution? If more specs are needed I would be happy to provide them, any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have the same problem with Windows7 on my M1530.I loaded  the VISTA driver  OK and the sound works but it is real fuzzy.

You have 3 audio driver options:

1. Install the Sigmatel Vista driver using vista compatibility mode, or

2. Completely remove the Sigmatel driver and let Windows install its native driver, or

3. Install the IDT R226903 Win 7 audio driver that several owners have reported works in the M1530 and fixes the mic/Skype issue. To install it, download and unpack it to c:\Dell\drivers\R226903, but cancel the installation process. Then completely remove all Sigmatel drivers from your system, and restart the laptop. Go into Device Manager to the audio controller (under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers"). Right click on it and chose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the driver and don't let Windows look for it. Browse to c:\Dell\drivers\R226903 then click "Next". When you restart the laptop Windows will detect your audio hardware and install the IDT driver.

If the sound is fuzzy with all 3 drivers then you probably have a hardware issue.

Jimco -thanks for the step by step instructions much appreciated.

I managed to install the driver in  c:\Dell\drivers\R226903 and the sound is slightly better but still not useable.

Maybe the easy answer is to install Windows 8 or will I get the same problem that the M1530 is not compatible??

Did you install the following drivers in order? With Windows 7 Service Pack 1 included on your installation disc or the standalone service pack installed before any of  the drivers? Also did you perform a clean installation. See Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 7: http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

If not uninstall the Audio Driver from add/remove programs. Then remove the driver from the Device Manager and restart. See page 427 of Windows Reinstallation Guide.

Then install the drivers in the order listed and see how it works.
