Weird sound issue XPS 17(L702x)

Hi,

I received my laptop few days ago. And while I'm happy with it there is some annoying issue. If I would be listening to some music  in the background and would open up a web browser sometimes it kind of slows the music down, like changes its temp as if the pc was about to freeze. And everything seems to lag during this opening time. Just a minute ago I was checking a video on youtube. I then switched the webpage(entered the new address into the address bar, if you must know bbc f1). And the same thing happened. The whole laptop lagged for literally 2-3seconds.  IT's really driving me mad  to be honest. As I can't think of anything what might cause it.

I installed the newest audio driver, nvidia driver(as I sort of think optimus might be the cause of it?)

Any help?

Does the sound crack. And do you have the problem when you play songs or movies from your hard disc too?

Yes, it kind of cracks and lags. It seems to mostly happen when I'm on the internet and playing music from either itunes or the internet. Like whenever I open a new tab in Chrome or open a new website it does it. I tried to update my internet card but that didn't seem to solve anything but I definitely think it is being caused by the internet as that is the only time I have had this issue.

No it's not from internet. You will find it out eventually. What's worse to come is that one day you are going to turn your pc on and find that your profile(windows) is gone. Due to fact that some device in the laptop is turning itself on/off. Also, You can't install Windows 7 Professional on it. Nor Vista.. due to memory ( my guess).

Honestly this is the worst laptop I've ever had.

You can hear what happens. And I was simply running WMplayer.

Yeah, that is the same sound "lag" that I keep getting. However, I am still tempted to believe it has something to do with the internet card as the only time I have ever had this happen is while I am using an online browser. Is there still no solution? This is very frustrating!

Are you guys using Google Chrome when this happens? Because I have tested around in Internet Explorer and have not experienced the problem. I'm starting to think it's a Chrome issue which would really blow since that's my favorite browser!

after installing win7 sp1 I've started to notice same thing on a completely different laptop... so that makes me to  conclude win7 sp1 is the one at fault... xps 17 did come with win7 sp1?

I think I have got the solution. I was very much annoyed with this problem in my system Inspiron 14R. It does not have Nvidia. After thinking on the symptoms and changing everything inside my laptop I found that it must be something related to what I did after I purchased my system. I would update it regularly. Last sunday, I re-installed my O.S. and installed old drivers that came in a C.D. with my system. I have not updated my O.S. or my drivers and the system is running fine since then. No issues. Try it, it really works. The saddest part is that I knew somewhere that this could be the solution but I still handed over my system to dell service centre who handed my system back with a scratch on the tomato red screen back. They couldn't solve the problem but created this scratch on it.

I own a L702x and has this problem as well. I also fixed it, so here is what I did.

-Open Start Menu

-Within the search box type "msconfig"

-Select the Boot tab

-Select advanced options

I will pause to explain something. My L702x has the i7-2820QM 2.3 GHz processor. So therefore when I would check the box "number of processors" you can access a list of the processors the computer recognizes mine would be "8". This noise issue was occuring and I found that when it was my computer only recognized "2". Losing 6 of the cores.

Regardless....

-Uncheck "Number of Processors"

-Uncheck "Maximum Memory"

-Click OK

-Click Apply

Restart your L702x.

-Once the computer comes back on right click on the taskbar and select "Start Task Manager"

-Select the Performance Tab

Look at the CPU Usage History date on the top graph. I have 8 graphs representing all 8 of my Cores on my processor. However many cores you have should be listed too.

I understand your frustrations and I want to help you. I've been there believe me, I spent a lot of money on my L702x and I know exactly how you feel. After you have done this and all the cores are shown, go about your routine and do your thing and see if it happens - it shouldn't.

Basically Windows loses performance because it is not utilizing the all of its processor capabilites. So it easily becomes overwhelmed with the simplest of tasks creating the lag.

I hope I explained everything well and it works for you! :)

If not repost and I'll help you find a solution!

I haven't had any problems since I fixed the cores about two months ago. I had stumbled across it as I was adjusting my startup programs in 'msconfig'.

I had also formatted my L702x and installed Windows 7 along with all of the (Dell) drivers. My video card is the nVidia GT555m 3gb with Optimus. I'm wondering why it is not occuring if it is infact a nVidia issue?

Although after glancing through the link about nVidia being the cause, I can relate to the speakers popping while using YouTube and playing some games. Today I reinstalled the Realtek Audio Driver to see if that would fix it. I'm sure some would assume that it is related to nVidia but I'm not so sure. Though if they are I will gladly submit to whatever fixes it.

But we do know that if the computer isn't utilizing it's processor completely that can cause the issue. So in the process of elimination others can check there anyway and move on to other ways to fix it.

So I guess to sum it up I don't have the lag issue, but the speaker popping has occured recently. Certainly not as irritating as the original horrible lagging sound though!

I don't think that this is Nvidia issue as I have the same problem but I don;t have Nvidia in my system. It's highly frustrating to own a system with this problem. Are the guys from DELL following this and other similar threads on this issue. This issue is plaguing everywhere.
