The Dell Latitude XPi CD MMX uses an ESS 1887 sound chip.
There are Usually Plug and Play Conflicts with this chip and WIN2000
You may need to RE-Enable ISA to PCI IRQ Routing AND manually set the
ports etc for the sound.

You can download Drivers here
http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/drivers.shtm#isa
1. Start Registry Editor .
2. Locate and click to select the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PCMCIA\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click New, click DWORD Value, type DisableIsaToPciRouting in the NewValue box, and then press ENTER.
4. Click to select DisableIsaToPciRouting, click Edit, and then click Modify.
5. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.
This procedure enables IRQ routing for 16-bit ISA Cards.

Very good hints, thanks for this. Turned out that my Win2k wanted me to use 2 DMA channels. Device Manager, Sound devices, ESS 1887, then uncheck Automatic settings and select Configuration From drop down to set 0000 which has 2 DMA channels instead of 3. I also added the registry entry but that didn't do it for me.
