Windows 7 Log-in without net connection

Hi All,

I'm having a very strange problem, I'm able to work with my laptop, which works very good, (Latitude) when I've the net cable plugged to the laptop, but windows doesn't start if I don't have the net plugged to the laptop.

I think you understand that this is a very strange and nasty problem. What do you think the problem is due to?

Hi gRicky,

This is indeed a strange problem. Try to reset the BIOS setting to defaults.

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, tap ‘F2’ key on the Dell logo
  • This will take you to the BIOS screen
  • Press ‘F9’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’
  • Press ‘F10’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’

Also, update the BIOS of the computer. Since you have not mentioned the exact model no of the computer. So I do not have the direct. However, you can click on the link http://dell.to/11iojrK -> type the Service Tag of the computer -> choose the operating system -> expand BIOS, look for the latest version AXX, download and install it.

Hi DELL-Appu,

First of all, thank your for your reply.

I have followed the instructions you gave me, but the solution doesn't work.

To be more detailed: I'm using a DELL Latitude E5520. The Dell web site doesn't signal any BIOS upgrade for this model. So, I think the system is currently updated!

Have you got any other advice to follow?
Do you think is just a BIOS problem?

Thank you in advance.
Best Regards,
Ricky.

Hi Ricky,

Thank you for the response. You've mentioned that the system doesn't restart without the network cable plugged in. Could you please elaborate what exactly happens? Do you get any error message? Does it get stuck on a particular screen?

Also, update the BIOS of the computer from the following link http://dell.to/17Rao0s

Hi DELL-Appu S

Yes of course I can explain better what happen. It's very simply, if you don't have the net cable plugged to the laptop, the system starts and shows you the windows 7 log-in frame. The system allows you to insert your credentials (user name, and password) but, after you have clicked on log-in button (Ok button or continue) a black frame appears and the system doesn't do anything more than shows you that it's loading something. It seems that the system is loading something because you can see the classic mouse icon that indicates that something is going on. Finally the laptop remains in that condition and you can't do anything until you restart the laptop with the net cable plugged to the laptop.

I'll try to upgrade the bios such as you have suggested doing.

Awaitng more information, thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Hi gRicky,

Thank you for the detailed response; appreciate it. Is this a work computer or your personal computer?

Let me know the outcome after updating BIOS.

Also, check if the computer behaves the same way in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking

Power off the computer -> Restart the computer, tap F8 on Dell logo 2-3 times -> This will take you to ‘Windows Advanced Boot Options’ -> Choose ‘Safe Mode’ in the Advanced Boot menu (use ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrow keys to highlight the option, press ‘enter’ to select) -> When Windows finishes loading in Safe mode, check if the computer is working fine.

I've checked it and it seems to work properly when you access to it in Safe Mode.

I've downloaded the bios file you have suggested downloading, the installation instructions tells that is good for Windows systems but windows 7 is not mentioned as supported system. Does the installation work also with windows 7? I won't to do anything can destroy the machine....

Hi Ricky,

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode without the network cable connected?

BIOS updates are system specific and not operating system specific. The link that I have shared is the updated BIOS version for this system model. You may continue with the update and share the findings. It wont ' harm the computer.

Sorry, on the previous replies I didn't tell you the truth. I've tried again bootting the system and I can boot it into Safe Mode without the network cable connected but just into Safe Mode without net service, normal mode.

I've done the bios update and the problem persists!

Hi Ricky,

I would suggest you to perform PC Restore on the computer. This would eradicate any software issues. Please refer to this video http://dell.to/1duA3Rp

Note: This step leads to complete data loss including pictures, music files, videos, documents and applications. Please disconnect any external peripherals as well.

Hi,

As you have suggested on doing, I have performed the PC restore. After the restoring procedure everything seemed to work well till the installation of the wireless driver. I couldn't find on your download page the driver of the WLAN than I have installed it using the Windows 7 searching from the hardware advanced page of the operating system. But the laptop started doing the problem I thought I was solved. Then, what is the right driver to install? Now, I'm still having the problem. How can I solve it without restoring the PC again?

Awaintig your prompt reply, thank you for your support.

Hi,

I found this Driver from your US web-site: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=NMGJH

Is this right form my E5520?

Hi Ricky,

In order to helps you with the correct driver, please share the hardware Id's. Go to Device Manager -> expand Other Devices -> right click on the listed driver -> choose Properties -> Details -> from the drop-down under properties, choose Hardware ID.

Also, share a screenshot of Device Manager with Other devices expanded.

Hi APPU,

In order to give you more information about my system, attached at this, you will find some images which I hope that they will help you to better understand my PC configuration.

I installed the driver I had downloaded from the address of your web site, which I posted to you. After the installation of the driver, the system recognized the DW1501 as WLAN on my system.
Even though I thought I have solved the problem, it wasn't like that. At moment, I still have the problem but it's a little bit changed. I can do the logon on windows without the LAN cable plugged on and without the WLAN switched ON but the PC takes several minutues to logging on windows (something about 20 minutes). So, I think there still is something that doesn't working as expected.

Hi Ricky,

Thank you for the response. I would suggest you to run the on-board Dell diagnostics to check the hardware functionality. Please refer Run Built-In Diagnostics for Your System
