Windows 8 Drivers

I recently bought a Dell XPS Lx502s and I was wondering if we will get driver updates for Windows 8?

Probably, but since the OS isn't being released to the public for over two more months, it'll be a while.

Windows 8 is available now to MSDN subscribers (and Technet too I think)

That may be true, but it's not going to have official support until October 26 -- and this being a model that will likely be gone by then, it may take a while for Windows 8 drivers to appear.

The whole idea of the release on MSDN, which is also known as the RTM version, no not read the manual, but "Released to Manufacturers" is so as companies like Dell can include drivers for it now. If you buy a PC/laptop today, there's the upgrade to Windows 8 offer: there should be zero delay from manufacturers on customers taking up that offer. Zero !

And let's not forget Dell sells a lot of it's higher end notebooks and desktop PC's to software developers, architects, IT people etc. These people also need to be testing things as soon as possible. If these people have Dell systems fail for months, I can guarantee you they will add that to the list of reasons to shop elsewhere for the next round of purchases.

You may be right, Dell might indeed be slow to release drivers, but companies like Toshiba & Lenovo are definitely releasing drivers already.

This is pathetic

Why do I have a i7 processor and a 2GB graphics card and 8GB ram and I can't still use Windows 8 properly because Dell isn't going to release drivers?

I am leaving Dell and going over to Lenovo because they always update their drivers even for very old laptops.

But I will wait till October to see if anything comes up. Right now I am reading this on Windows 8 and it feels horrible. My eyes are paining.

Dell is not Microsoft or Intel.

WDDM 1.1 Drivers should work for most basic things.

Which version of Windows 8 do you have on this machine? Even if it is RTM, you can not expect it to work on your particular hardware configuration right out of the gate.  RTM means Release to Manufacturer - so the manufacturer can finalize drivers for a finished operating system.

If it is paining your eyes, maybe you should convert back to Windows 7 or other until acceptable drivers are released for your particular machine.

WDDM 1.1 drivers DONT work well enough for most things - on a Vostro 3700 I cannot access my discrete graphics, wireless is dreadful, no bluetooth and no fingerprint reader, om Zoostorm Tablet - everything works - go figure, Dell takes your money and hangs you out to dry - probably bitter about Surface :-)

Dell did not hang anybody out to dry.YOU chose to install a release candidate of a new OS that is NOT supported for another month or so.Why is it Dells fault??This is the problem with 80% of the public, they see a new OS coming out and decide to install (even though it is not the official OS yet) and do not do there homework on the specs the system you are installing can even function with it at the moment.

It is not about specs. Windows 8 is going to be released on October. I am using Windows 8 Professional. They give it out to most msdn subscribers. Dell already got Windows 8 before me. I am not blaming Dell. I am saying its too late. I even wonder if they will release the drivers.

They stuffed a touch screen with my Dell laptop for Windows 7.

Now when a touch centered OS is released, they don't have the driver updates.

I am not trying to be mean or disrespectful to you but the point of this is;The OS is a Release Candidate,it is not completely finallized yet. With that said, all drivers for everything will not be completely available until the official release of the OS.If you were running the completed OS (and i mean the official released OS)and you were having these problems i would be a little upset about that.Just wait until everything gets worked out and the final OS is released.

I can understand.

DGKPCON: the OS passed release candidate sometime ago. The OS is now at RTM stage. It is available to manufacturers to pre-install and test. It is available to MSDN subscribers. A 90 day evaluation of the Enterprise version is available to Technet subscribers.  These are the final bits, the same bits as get released to the public to buy off the shelf in about 6 weeks time.

The "Release Candidate" you refer to was probably the "Release Preview" which was released late May. Before that in Feb there was the "Consumer Preview", and back in September last year (yes about a year ago) there was the "Developer Preview". The "Release To Manufacturer" version was made available generally on August 15th 2012.

Also as stated previously, a major reason the RTM version is made available on MSDN and Technet is so as developers, and IT staff can test the OS in their work environments.  Dell not having drivers, means IT departments can't test the software and know if it works across their enterprise for a rollout.  The driver model hasn't changed significantly since the Release Preview. Other vendors do have drivers out, some are releasing them as "beta" version to ensure their customers can meet their organisation's needs.

So not meaning to be disrespectful, but the OS is not RC, it is RTM and is finalized.

Many seem to misunderstand what is going on.  RTM is what will be released to the public on October 26.  RTM is made available for hardware and software manufactures to insure their product will work correctly when Windows 8 is released, not before.  The general public should not be running RTM versions.  I have never found a Dell driver, there may be a few, but not many.  Most drivers are from Microsoft, INTEL, AMD/ATI, NVIDIA, LSI and Broadcom.  Dell packages other manufactures and makes them available on their web site as a convenience to their customers.  Try this, go to the device manager, select the proprieties each device and see .who the actual manufacture is.  I am actually running Windows 8 Enterprise on two machines.  One is actually a Hyper-V virtual PC on top of a windows server.  The other is on a Dell D820 laptop.  Since NVIDIA has not released any display drivers yet, the laptop display is restricted to 1024 x 768.
