XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

Hi, ive been having this problem for a while now and it is very annoying. During gameplay my computer freezes, sometimes I can ctrl-alt-del and end the game but sometimes the computer goes completely unresponsive and i have to hold down the power button. At first i thought it might just be a problem with call of duty black ops but it has happened in some other games now too, even old games like warcraft 3. What is wrong with my laptop? Is it just drivers or is there actually something wrong with my laptop? Has anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

Got the same freeze problem with my Dell XPS l502x ( i7 2630m, 6 gb, GT540m 2gb.....). Laptop just freezes few minutes into games. Have tried out all suggested solutions (updated drivers..etc...etc...) but problem still persists.

Also i noticed problem does not occur when i have charger disconnected.

any solutions for this yet...?????

Tanveersk;

Could be your power setting.

Also check your Nvidia Control Panel 3D settings.   Nvidia uses Optimus for power optimization.  Your integrated graphics are normally used.  When high-performance graphics are required, Optimius switches to the Nvidia GPU card.   If the game(s) are not in the list, Optimus will not perform properly.  Global settings should be "Automatic".  Program Settings should be "High-performance NVIDIA processor" for each specific game you are using.  Your games must be in the list.  If not, then add them.   You should have all items in the Desktop menu checked.  This will provide a graphics choice in the right-click context menu (Integrated or High-performance).  Further, an Icon in the Taskbar will show up and indicate when the Nvidia processor in use.

I am not sure why, but periodically I have to reinstall the Nvidia graphics driver as the context menu item disappears.    You should use Driver Sweeper to clear only the Nvidia Graphics files - Display and PhysX.  On the Nvidia driver installation, choose "custom" and "clean install".

Keep us advised on outcome.

i have already tried everything you mentioned...updated to latest bios, used Driver Sweeper did a clean install of latest Nvidia drivers...i have set games to use high performance graphic processor still results are same...after laptop freezes using power button to reset is only the option..

somehow games run without a hiccup on battery whereas it should be the other way around..!!

Be sure the power settings are correct and not an unknown or unwanted setting entered by error.  Go to:  Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options.  The Dell plan setting should be the default.  Click on Dell Plan - Change Plan Settings.   You will see the settings for Battery and Plugged In.  The following settings are for ny XPS 15 L502X:  Battery: Dim = 2 Min, Display Off  = 5 min, Sleep = 5 Min;  Plugged In:  Dim = 5 Min, Display Off = 20 Min, Sleep = Never.   These seem to work fine for me.

The only other thing I can think of is something in Windows 7 set-up.  You can do a System Restore or Repair see:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=266590&doclang=en&l=en&s=dhs   The System Restore will reset your ststem to an earlier date when it was working fine or allow you to enter Windows Repair.  See Microsoft Windows 7 support for additional information for repairing Windows 7 and how to use the Operating System CD for a repair via the Dell CD "Operating System Aready Installed on Your System".

Contact Dell Support is another route.  Start with XPS Support Chat.  For software issues they may want to charge you even though your warranty is OK as warranty is for hardware.  You may be able to convince them otherwise based when the problem stsrted.

Good luck.

The battery is a smooth source of power unlike AC power.  The charger still has some ripple in the power to the PC.  Filters and conditioning usually remove most of it so the PC is not affected.   These systems are somewhat sensitive to the DC voltage and/or power conditioning.  The charger voltage could be improper and yet still charge the battery.  The PC goes to power-line source only once battery is charged.   If the charger power conditioning circuit isn't doing its job, some problems could occur.

Have you contacted Dell support?  You can use email chat and usually get your system fixed that way.  Phone calls are OK unless you get someone who does not speak English well.  Most of the time I can not understand tech support on the phone unless they are Americans in Round Rock, TX.   Tech support should send you a new charger which could be the problem - faulty filtering, over voltage, under voltage, or something similar with the charger.  I have seen several cases where chargers have been replaced.

MTNY, why do think it is your MB?  Could b any of the items we have discussed so far in this thread.  Your best bet is to contact Dell Support & discuss your specific issue.  I think I would ask about the battery charger.  They are good on the email chat at helping you solve the problem.
