Laptops freeze up

Hello,

We are a (business) MSP and have several hundred Dell Latitudes in circulation (among some other models). We have frequently put away the Latitude 3450/3550 and 5450/5550 over the past few months.

These laptops are shipped with a clean Windows installation and then the driver library is restored via Dell Command Update. The drivers are also updated after that.

Many systems are fairly basic. I.e. standard things like Chrome, the Office suite, etc.

We have experienced on several occasions, with different customers, that these Latitudes seem to freeze up. The only solution then is to hold down the power button for several seconds and thus reboot the laptop.

All systems where this happens are also up-to-date.

What can explain this possible behavior and are there more people experiencing this problem?

By the way, it also happens with older generation Latitudes but only since about six months has it become quite frequent.

Same here on at least 6  Latitude 5550 units.  It happened to two during the initial set and Microsoft update installs. Nothing else was install on the machine.   I did a factory reset install on one of them and still the same issue.

I've had 4 already with freezing and BSOD issues with a fresh and Factory Reimage

Any have a fix for this issue

Hi everyone,

We’ve seen a few recent reports of Latitude laptops freezing, and we want to follow up.

If you're still experiencing this issue, please reply with the following:

  • Are the freezes still happening?
  • Have you tried updating Windows, drivers, and BIOS?
  • Can you share the steps to reproduce the issue, if any?
  • Please include your Service Tag (you can send it this info privately, via direct message to me).

This information will help us investigate further and work toward a solution.

Thanks for your help!

@DELL-Nat M

Nat - Currently trying to reimage a Latitude 5450 <Private information removed by Dell Moderator>, device froze during the imaging process.  I updated the BIOS to latest version (1.14.1), released on 13 Mar 2025, device froze again during the next imaging process.  This has played out on several 5450 we have in use.

@Stephen Brown Hi, would you mind testing the following?
Please uninstall Dell Command Update and try again. This is a temporary workaround for testing purposes, as our team is still investigating the root cause of the freezes.

Ever find a fix? I'm having the same issue with my Latitude 5550 and I've noticed it on others I've deployed. I check the event viewer, .dmp logs, drivers and can never seem to nail it down.

I've had this reported on maybe 10-12 laptops across my org so far, Latitude 7420s and 7440s. Like others have posted, only a hard reset brings it back (for a time) and I cannot identify a cause.

Seeing this too. What has everyone else been doing? Getting Motherboards replaced?

Can confirm this is happening with our laptops as well, specifically Latitude 5450s. BIOS is up to date, all drivers are up to date yet keyboard and mouse lock up on random docks. Is Dell doing any recall on this or has there been a fix in place yet?

@DELL-Nat M What's the reasoning behind uninstalling DCU? Is there a known issue with it.

Hi @PS83Tech

We’ve observed that since June, several users have reported issues with high CPU usage and system freezes. Because this is affecting multiple models, we’ve been investigating whether the root cause might be related to certain software components, specifically DCU, SupportAssist, or DDPM.

In June, a new version of DCU (5.5) was released, so we asked users to uninstall it temporarily to help determine if it was contributing to the issue. However, since most users didn’t follow through with the test, we weren’t able to confirm whether DCU was indeed the cause.

@DELL-Nat M I'm uninstalling DCU on a machine right now, except I have been using version 5.0.0, A00 as we've had several issues using the latest for installing updates.

I will report back if uninstalling helps.
