Latitude 5420's, 5430's and 5520's all freezing

Latitude 5520

Latitude 5520

Hi,

We have Latitude 5430s, 5420s and 5520s that freeze up. W10 or W11 just locks up. The system then needs to be restarted. It seems to happen more in the morning. They are all Dells Windows build. They are all up to date with Windows updates and Dell Command. On the 5520 I have reinstalled the chipset drivers. 5410's don't seem to be affected. Anyone have any suggestions or seen this before?

Kind regards,

Hi @DavidIT  that is very strange. Hopefully they all have the same problem so that one type of fix can be deployed.

Please run Malwarebytes Free to see if this can find and fix this issue. Download Malware Removal | Free Antivirus Scan & Virus Protection Tool (malwarebytes.com)

Laptop freezing should create events. Please run windows Reliability Monitor and wait for event timeline to be created. Open freezing events and they should be reporting the root cause. How to use Windows Reliability Monitor to identify software issues | Dell US

Please run Check Disk to find and automatically fix any corrupted files. How to Use the Chkdsk Command in Windows (lifewire.com)

Please share what you find. Thank you.

I am using Latitude 5400 to type this.

1. Are all of the machines have SSDs ? (with HDDs these latitudes are worthless, use SSD of all)

2. have you checked reliability monitor /Event viewer for logs whenever they freeze

3. Run Extended test on all of them > F12 > Diagnostics > Memory test

Hi,

1. yes they are all SSDs (originals from Dell)

2. Yes. In the Event Monitor, there is nothing that suggests why. In the Reliability Monitor, the app or driver that crashes is different on all three machines.

3. I've not done a Memory test yet. I am swapping out one of the laptops today. So I'll do a memory test first. I will also put a fresh MS image of Windows 10 on rather than the Dell supplied OEM as I am starting to suspect that it is that.

Kind regards,

Hi Crimsom,

The Reliability Monitors doesn't show anything useful as it is a different app/driver on each machine. On the 5500 I have re-installed all the drivers from Dell Downloads. I'll do the check disk when I get it back today.

Kind regards,

Great Step 3 is the most promising one. Please share the results.

Also do check processor, disk and memory util in Task manager in your tests, Running a utility  for temperature would be great too.

Memory and Disk check both passed. I reinstalled the 5500 graphics driver and it didnt crash yesterday. I double check with that user today.

No Events found!
