From Dell specifications, your Latitude E6420 could support 8GB of memory officially. However, users have installed more than specs and this system can support and works with 16GB of memory, validated by users.
I have owned 2 Dell Latitude E6420 laptops and I've upgraded both to 16gb of RAM. Before you do an upgrade past 8GB, make sure you flash the BIOS to the latest revision (I believe its A25). If you install the RAM before flashing the BIOS to the latest version, the laptop won't boot.

16 GB is the max RQAM size.

use "WMIC Memphysical Get MaxCapacity, Memorydevices" in cmd as administrator
