:Product registration question

My Latitude 5530 was given to me as a gift.  A friend purchased it new on Amazon and had it shipped to me.  My first instinct was to register the product to validate any warranty.  Dell's site informed me that I needed Support Assistant, so I downloaded and installed it.  For some reason it can't run, and Dell can't identify my product.  I looked at the Transfer Ownership form, which was the suggested alternative.  This leads me to 2 questions:  1) Shouldn't Support Assistant run on a new machine? (It does on my older Dell.)  2) There is no previous owner, so how can I use the Transfer Form?

Use the service tag (in setup, F2 at powerup) to look up the warranty status at dell.com/support (you can also register the system manually).

If there is any issue with the service tag not resolving, ask the seller (it may or may not be Amazon, as many systems are sold through private storefronts on Amazon).

@ejn63 I think I'm OK, but I find one thing a little confusing.  Upon entering the service tag information I see that "Support" is due to expire at the end of Dec. 2024.  Nowhere do I see the word "Warranty."  Are they synonymous in Dell-speak?

Usually, but there should be a warranty listed for the system.  If there isn't, it's a question for the seller.

@Flatulus Maximus  Amazon has dell official seller account, if you buy the product from there, there shouldn't be an issues with registration as these products are brand new. I have purchased over 3000 dell products as an IT admin and have fare share of stories when I tried to save some dollars for my company buying them.

In your case, this seems like a Renewed/ Refurbished/ pre owned computer, sold by an individual seller. There are many issues with it.

1. Even if SupportAssist installs fine and identifies the product is in your possession, you will have to provide previous owner information, as the machine could be a stolen unit. It could be a replacement unit as well, where owner has to return the original product back to dell and instead they end up selling it on Amazon. In this case Dell will not support the unit at all and will ask you to reach Amazon seller for support /refund.

2. In some cases these sellers modify the configuration (add more ram, SSD) to make the deal look more attractive. You should check the specs of your computer and compare it with factory specs. please visit Support | Dell US and enter the service tag of your computer, click on view product specs. It should match your config, Dell will not warrant support any additional parts added by seller.

3.   A friend purchased it new on Amazon : Please have your Friend reach Amazon support so that they can contact Seller for original owner information. Amazon should take the product back if seller doesn't respond to your queries.

4.  I see that "Support" is due to expire at the end of Dec. 2024 : It must have more info on the page. Like basic onsite, Basic mail in or Premium support.

@XPS_Man Wow!  That's a lot of info.  Thanks.  I'm trying to obtain information about the seller now.  In the meantime, I went to Dell Support, entered the Service Tag info.  I apparently have the :Pro Support level.  A screenshot is attached.  I don't see a link to the original specs for the machine.  I searched Amazon for this specific make and model, with my 64 GB of RAM and 2 TB SSD, and it says nothing about being refurbished or renewed.  But I'll await the seller information from the friend who purchased it for me, and we'll see.
