unknown usb device (device descriptor request failed)

Hello, i have a new problem. The title is what's listed in my device manager.

E5540

Windows 10 Pro x64

The thing is, there is nothing connected to the usB ports and all 3 usb ports work perfect. so i have no idea what the issue could be?

More information and suggested fixes below. It could be a corrupt driver and not a USB device.

Having a related issue but suspect it may be hardware and a warranty matter but will hold off going into excessive detail until I know the discussion isn't dead.  A quick limerick, joke, made-up word, etc. just to confirm someone is monitoring.  Thanks.

Try using the link below to update that freefall sensor driver. This link is direct from our FTP site. If the driver gives you the same error in installation I would suggest right clicking / uninstalling the currently listed bang in the device manager then running this download again.

You can also attempt to manually install the driver if this fails. Addictivetips.com has a great walkthrough HERE for manually installing drivers if needed.

Another tool for updating that driver would be the Dell Command update utility. This can be downloaded from the link below and should update all dell drivers on your system automatically.

Thanks,

Had the same issue on my Dell XPS 9570, in device manager it said “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)”, I assumed that was the missing Fingerprint sensor.

Checked that I had latest bios and enabled Software Guard Extensions, but no success.

I then did then remember that when changing keyboard I had to disconnect the Fingerprint sensor.

Opened laptop, and correctly, my connector was not seated correctly, fixed it, and when booting up the fingerprint sensor showed up.

for the newcomers, check if the port you are is is a 3.0 or a 2.0 port. cause i tried using my old external drive and I accidentally connected it to the usb 3.0 but the drive didn't support it. When i connected it to usb 2.0 (usually on the left side) it worked normally.
