Dell 4600 problems
Good evening (ahh morning),
I have a Deminsion 4600 that I got back in 2004. It has been a Great work horse until around December when I was hit with a nasty virus from my AT&T Yahoo (*secure) homepage. The machine was cleaned but the computer is running ever so SLOW. I have dealt with this in the past but nothing seems to bring it back anywhere it was a few months back. My current thought is the regisrty is bad and I'm wondering if a comlpete reformat or new HD might be in order and I can start all over again with a fresh new re-start. It was my desire to give this computer to my daughter (who has a HP from back in 2002). So I give my computer to the experts at the Dell Forum. I have all the diskd that came with it but I just feel a bit uncomfortable with a total re-do. Any thoughts? All my anti-everything comes up clean so that's what makes me thing it's the registry. And does anyone know where I can get a re-formatting guide that will assist me with this entire... If I can get this computer up and running well, I get to buy a NEW Dell..... (many things can motivate a person). I Thank you ALL for your patience with this very long message and for any help you may provide... Have a Great weelend..... Art

What you have to do depends on whether you have a hidden Dell restore partition or not.
Linux is an operating system. You posted your question here even though this is the wrong place for your question.

Great Information. But I was wondering, I believe I'll have to reformat or perhaps buy a new HD. This is the part that confuses me the most. In the past I have added HD's to my computers and it asks for "partitioning" information. I have NO idea how to partition a HD. And if I was to reuse my original HD, how do I get this partition correctly done? I wish to Thank you for the re-install information. That was Top Rate. But I think before I do a re-install, I need to prepare my HD first. I could be WAY off base here but would (again) appreciate a reply. By the way (here comes another dumb question)... Where does the "linux" term enter into the scheme of this re-format and re-install of Windows XP?.... Thanks again.... ArtC
