Dual boot Linux with Vista?
Hi all,
I have a dell Inspiron E1505 with Vista Home Premium. Is there any way I can configure my computer to do a dual boot with a version of Linux? Preferable to boot from an external hard drive if possible?
If anyone knows of any existing documentation or hints etc I would really appreciate the help

I actually ended up setting up a dual boot on the same hard drive. I have Vista installed on my Dell laptop, this enabled me to shrink the C drive. once that was done I installed the latest version of Ubuntu (Hardy Heron I believe), into the unused space.
Somewhere I have the links to all the guides that finally got me through the entire process (though I may have lost some of them, but could probably locate them again), overally it was pretty painless though, just took some time to figure out. If I remember correctly I did figure out a way to boot from the external, but decided it didn't make sense.
The install was fairly simple, though I did find a couple of guides that helped me through the installation process. Now When I start up the laptop I am given the choice of which operating system I wish to boot.

The only real problem I had was figuring out how to do some of the advanced graphics, such as the cube, this was because my graphics card is an ATI Radoen x1400, sounds like that wouldn't be a problem with other graphics cards though. It was a bit of a hassle, but I finally got it to work. Long story on how I finally got it to work, and not even sure I'd be able to help anyone duplicate what I did to get it working. But to be fair, the advanced graphics I had problems with initially weren't a big deal, it was mainly eye cancy type of stuff, normal graphics worked just fine.
Let me know if you'd like me to try to find the information I came up with, it may take me a few days to get back to you though. I know that at least some of it came from the Linux.org site, and some from the official Ubuntu site (lots of information in those two forums), other items I found from user groups and what was already mentioned earlier in this thread.
