GPU HANG

My XPS13 9360 DE encountered occasional hangs when all of a sudden screen the turns black and the machine becomes unresponsive, i.e. no keyboard input possible. The related log message is

Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848006] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0xfffffffe, in Xorg [1330], reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848011] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848013] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848015] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848017] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848020] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error

followed a couple of times by

Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.848125] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.850999] [drm] RC6 on
Jan 21 20:47:49 astralix kernel: [  821.864587] [drm] GuC firmware load skipped

A hard reboot is required which, of course, clears /sys/class/drm/card0/error, so no crash dump can be provided.
