Random Shutdown On Studio 1555 Using Ubuntu

I have Ubuntu 20.04 installed on an old Studio 1555 and it keeps randomly closing down. I've changed the battery and ram and I'm using an external mouse. I bought the laptop second hand with the Ubuntu already installed. I realise at 4GB of DDR2L of RAM I'm at the limits of my machine. It won’t let me install a lighter Linux as it says it can’t find the 'live files'. I’ve tried several version using usb pens written on both my Windows laptop and my iMac main computer.

Any help would be appreciated as I’m determined not to be beaten. Thanks everyone.

Did you solve your issue in the end?

I have exactly the same issue, now that I revived my old Studio 1555. Had stopped using it many years ago as it had issues with the power button after a drop. Battery died, but now I bought a new battery, still keeps crashing. Installed a new power button, thinking that's the issue, no change (except the power button is much much brighter, maybe a current issue?..).

I had windows 7 on it, always crashed but ran fine in recovery mode. Decided to install Linux (mint 22.1 MATE) now, also crashes but runs fine in recovery.

Did 9 hours of Memtest86, 7 passes, seems RAM sticks are fine (2xDDR).

At this point I think it is either a GPU issue or something in the hardware is wrong.

Your experiences might hold new info if you would indulge me :)
