XPS 13 9370 Ubuntu versus CloneZilla

Hi,

My second question is regarding cloning the full disk with CloneZilla.

I have already used CloneZilla on other PCs but the XPS 13 9370, it seems not so easy to detect the CloneZilla USB key at boot.
I only managed once to boot on CloneZilla USB key the XPS 13 9370 Ubuntu Edition.
But I am not able to reproduce the steps.

I have found different posts on different web sites but not reliable in my case.
I have connected an USB hub (self/bus powered) with 2 USB keys : one for CloneZilla and one for image storage

Here were my tests:

- different CloneZilla USB key were tested

- different up-to-date CloneZilla versions were tested (debian or ubuntu based)

- Thunderbolt adapter on left or right of the PC

- BIOS version 1.4.0 or 1.5.1

- BIOS - Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Boot Support activated

- BIOS - Enable USB Boot activated

- BIOS SATA operation = AHCI

- BIOS POST behavior Fastboot : Minimal or Thorough

- BIOS Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Pre-boot Modules activated or not

- BIOS UEFI or Legacy...

- BIOS Secure Boot deactivated by default.

The second USB key for storage is most of the time detected from F12 Boot Menu.
It happens once that the Ubuntu based CloneZilla USB key was detected with Secure Boot enabled with UEFI boot.
So I have created an image from the disk.

Does someone has a 100% reproducible solution for detecting USB CloneZilla key at boot menu ?

Thanks.

Kind regards

What do you mean "not so easy to detect … at boot?" Does the computer boot the Clonezilla USB drive when it is plugged directly into the USB port on the computer while nothing is connected to a Thunderbolt port? If so then there is nothing wrong with the USB drive or Clonezilla. You can specify the Clonezilla boot USB drive as the target drive. You don't need a second USB drive. You can do everything you need to do with 1 - USB drive.

Hi,

I mean the USB CloneZilla key is not detected/listed in the F12 Boot Menu, so I can't boot on CloneZilla.
For your information, there is no USB port on XPS 13 9370, only Thunderbolt port and an USB Thunderbolt adapter.
So the USB hub is connected via the USB Thunderbolt adapter.
I need a second USB drive to save the image created by CloneZilla.
This is working on other PC.
But I have also tested the USB CloneZilla key alone without the USB hub without success.

If it's the Thunderbolt USB adapter that comes with the laptop, I don't need a link to it.

"One USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB Type-C) port with Power Delivery/ DisplayPort"

You're right! Please post a link to the Thunderbolt to USB adapter you're using. Connect the Clonezilla drive directly to the Thunderbolt to USB adapter, is the Clonezilla drive listed in the F12 boot menu? If not, are Bios Thunderbolt settings configured as Support, Support, Pre-boot, No Security (then User Authorization)? Is USB Configuration: Enable USB Boot Support and Enable External USB port? Is fastboot set to thorough? Is MBR/UEFI set to match the Clonezilla drive (Unless using the AMD64 version, the default is MBR). Do you have any other USB boot drives? Is any USB boot drive consistently listed in the F12 boot menu?

Are you able to access any USB drive from within your operating system?

Hi,

I am using the Dell USB Thunderbolt adapter.
The CloneZilla USB key was created via Tuxboot and is successfully working on other UEFI laptop.

As suggested, I have directly connected the USB CloneZilla key to the Dell Thunderbolt adapter and it seems always detected at F12 boot !
But when I am connecting the USB Hub (bus or self-powered), it is no more detected at boot.

This USB hub is working under Windows or Ubuntu OS.
So, it seems there is a compatibility issue with the USB Hub used (Amazon model) and XPS 13 boot F12.
Has someone encountered the same issue ?
The USB Hub is required to connect a second USB storage key to write the CloneZilla image.

Thanks !

Sounds good! It's not surprising that a third party external USB hub fails to see multiple USB boot devices. You can try another USB HUB but you might have better luck using a second USB-C to USB adapter in a TB3 port like this one.
