I installed the 4.4 Willy Werewolf kernel. I had to add the new intel Skylake GPU driver (4.3) and edit the /etc/initramfs/modules to include lines for i915 and nvme. I also had to install the latest firmware-b43.
However, this only works briefly and the machine frequently freezes and can only be recovered using a hard reset. I rarely get the machine to work for more than 10 mins before freezing and as I bought it for my company for software development it is completely unusable.
I am severely disappointed, I expected to have to patch a few things but I've spent over 20 hours trying to resolve these issues and have decided to return the machine for a refund before my 14 days are over.
I have the same XPS configuration and I didn't experienced this problem. I use Ubuntu 15.10 and I use it every day for development as well. I have other problems, for example sometimes it can't terminate the shutdown and I need to force a power off, both with kernel 4.3 and 4.4, but nothing similar to what you reported.
@TroelShh thanks but that's definitely not the same as my problem. I get the machine hanging when I am actively typing or moving the mouse cursor so it's not that the screen shuts down due to inactivity. The screen occasionally flickers several times before it crashes but not always.

Any chance it was your model?
