Auto adjustment problem

Hello!

I've browsed the forums for troubleshooting on this matter, but I haven't found anyone with the exact same problem as me.

I'm having trouble with my Dell U2311H monitor - it's just pure black. At first I thought there might be something wrong with my signal cable, so I just switched to a new one (DVI) when that didn't work, I thought there might be a problem with my DVI output, and changed to VGA. Still the same problem. The weird thing is though, that my other moniter connected to my computer (Philips television) works perfectly fine, except for one small detail. I've used the TV to play a game that I play daily, and it has always displayed the game in 16:9, but as of when my monitor stopped working, the TV is now showing the same game in 4:3. This leads me to believe that there might be a problem with my graphic card, but I don't know what kind of problem that would be. The power calbe is also working fine.

I did notice though that whenever I unplug or plug in cables, or change any screen resolution settings, my Dell monitor suddenly comes alive again, but only for a second or two, while showing the message "Auto adjustment in progress" and then turning black again. While browsing the forums I found a few people with the same problem, but they all seem to run Windows XP as they are talking about pressing the "turn computer off"-button and then pressing some button on the screen. Their problem also seems to be that the "auto adjustment in progress" flashes on their screen, and it works fine except for that.

So if anyone has a solution they'd be my hero, and save a poor student from wasting 200 bucks on a new screen :)

Just to conclude, this is the stuff that I've tried:

- Switching cables for DVI, VGA and power cable

- Checked that all cables are connected properly

- Downloaded the latest drivers for my graphic card (Apparently there aren't any for my monitor)

- Rebooted my computer (Obviously)

- Unplugged and re-plugged my graphic card

- Lowering the resolution on the screen

- Unplugged my TV (HDMI input)

Hope someone can help me!

It's not a problem with the source of the video signal (desktop computer, HDTV, etc.). If you had another monitor, you could verify this. The problem is with your monitor. There are two parts that are needed to produce the light that comes through the screen, the cathode tube, which is sort of like a fluorescent lightbulb, and the inverter board, which supplies electrical power to the lightbulb.

You might look around for a local shop that diagnoses and repairs monitors. Usually the necessary parts are pretty cheap.

Hi jdekis,

Please run the self test, as described here.

Hello!

I realise this is a quite late answer, but I didn't see it until now. The self test didn't help. However, I was unable to perform some of the actions listed, because my screen is black at almost all times. Is there anything else I can do?

I also forgot to add that after re-installing NET Framework 4.0 for the second time, my monitor seemed to work again. It was up and running for a full two-three minutes before shutting down again...

Probably a backlight or inverter board. I don't think it's a problem with your desktop.

I'm not sure I'm following. I don't know what an inverter board is, and if it was a problem with a backlight, shouldn't it be blank at all times? I'm not sure I know what you mean by desktop either... I'm not really into computer terms.

Oh, I see. Well yea, I've been using an old 4:3 monitor since my other one broke. I'll go to a local shop and see if they can fix it for me. Thanks.
