Bios not seeing total memory upgrade

I just added a second 512K memory to my Dim 4550 desktop to bring it up to 1G.  The memory was purchased from Dell using the service tag number to locate which memory to be purchase.  After installing only half (256k) of the second 512K is reconized.  Any suggestions on how to get the system to see and use all of the memory?

Make sure it is properly installed.

Try the new memory by itself.

Make sure it is really 512M and not mistakenly 256M.

Both memory chips are 512K.  Put them in one at a time and each can you as 512K but both installed together only come up as 768K.  Any other suggestion?

Which version bios? Do you reset bios to defaults? Do you have a high end video card in it?

A bad slot on the motherboard? Either module works in the first slot, but the second slot doesn't work?
