Chipset Driver Installation

Question

I am trying to install a Chipset Driver on an XPS730.  I first downloaded the Nforce 790i SLI/790 Ultra SLI driver to a DVD from the Nvidia web site.  If I go into Device Manager  am I correct the chipset driver is under Computer?  The procedure I use is to go to add/remove programs and remove the NVIDIA drivers prior to installing the new driver.  But everytime I reboot after removing the old driver when Windows starts it finds and reinstalls the old driver.  If I go and install the newer driver device manager still shows the old one.  What am I doing wrong or how do I stop the old driver from installing when I reboot after removing it?

Have you tried installing the new drivers without rebooting first after uninstalling the old drivers?

Are you sure the Nvidia driver is newer then the current driver? Have you tried to install in Safe Mode?

It was an error, use to be 630 now 730.

I was installing a new chipset driver because I was upgrading to the 64bit OS.  I ended up installing in safe mode.  But I am still not sure how to tell if the driver took.  Does it show the chipset driver under device manager somewhere?

That is what I ended up having to do, install the new driver before rebooting.

Unless Dell has changed it's policy, you should have received a resource CD from Dell with your XPS 730 chipset driver among other system necesary drivers for when reinstalling the OS.

I upgraded to Win 64Bit off of a Dell upgrade disk.  I downloaded the chipset driver from the Nivida site and was looking for a way to make sure the latest driver got loaded.  My question is where to find the driver version for the chipset to verify it got installed.  I wasn't sure what category it was under in Device Manager if it is even there.  The upgrade disk was sent to me when I had a 630 and was told by Dell I could use it on the 730, so I wasn't sure the correct driver was on the disk.

That's a new - and good question for me as well and to the best of my knowledge there is no chipset driver reference in Device Manager.

If you haven't already heard of Sisoft Sandra it's a diagnostic and benchmarking application that even the free version provides just about everything you'd want to know about the hardware and software installed in your system. I've used it for info in the past but don't keep it installed. I did download and run it to see if I could find a reference to my chipset driver - which I couldn't, but it did list the chipset version on my mobo along with myriad other system details. By the way, the free version (and full version) is both 32 and 64 bit compatible. I didn't spend a lot of time with it but you might give it a try and maybe you'll find a driver reference I didn't see.

I spend most of my time in the Gaming forums along with some 10 and 20k post count folks who also participate there. I'll post your question to see if someone there knows if the chipset driver version info is accessible and where.

Thanks VCraig.  I will give Sisoft Sandra a try.  I use Belarc Advisor and looked at that to see if it listed the driver but didn't see it.

try this :

1. uninstall old driver

2. reboot

3. run driver cleaner pro

4. reinstall newer driver

5. reboot

many others are having this same confusing problem on 780i/790i updating.

they need to put this driver in device manager, and it is not.

my system drivers were located in these folders:

c drive / vista 64 bit / drivers / all drivers in this folder - mobo,nvidia,audio,blu tooth,dvdrw.

i will now look to see where i verified it loaded. ( i upgraded the 780i and 8800 drivers a few months ago )

whoops .. did not do the 780i yet ...

I looked in my c drive  but I don't have a C:/vista 64 bit/drivers.  I have C:/Dell/Drivers where all the drivers are located but the folders are all labeled Rxxxxx.  Since I downloaded the Chipset driver from Nvidia it was labeled NForce 790i Sli/ultra Sli without a number at least that I saw, so I will have to do some research to find out what Nvidia called it.
