Com port Error

I tried to use my Phonetools and the Windows 98 PhoneDialer .An error message came up( ComPort in use by another application). I tried to resolve this issue with great help from a person named Perplexed. I went to Network Neighbor( Who Am I) and tried to disconnect the Com Port. That window didn't let me do anything except exit out of it. There was some unrecognizeable letters in that window. I'm using AOL and thta doesn't have a feature to disconnect.

Please post what com ports are listed in control panel, system, device manager, ports. Then post what com port your modem is on.

Joe, I am sorry to read that you are still having problems with phone tools. I have found a site for support for Dell Phone tools. Click HERE. According to Dell, Phone Tools is French software. The company will give you help in making their product work. Joe, you will find an icon for your modem connection to AOL in My Computer. Good Luck.

Joe, if you want to run the modem on com port 2 (and I do) remove the modem, and all comports except com1 listed under control panel, device manager, ports. Reboot the system and enter bios setup. Disable serial port 2 in the bios. Then upon booting up if com2 and the modem are not found go to add/remove hardware and it will pick up com2. Add com port 2 and the modem might be picked up after that. If not, in control panel, modems add the modem back to com2. Now, you can with serial port 2 enabled in bios change the modem to com4 instead. If the modem has no jumpers just add com 4 after removing the modem again and then re-boot. Then add modem to com4.

Sorry for the long delay. My modem is already on
com port 2. Should i try your suggestion any way?
How do you enter BIOS set-up.IS it after when the system first starts and then you hit an F-key? Thanks for the help.

Joe, yes. Do what I wrote in the last message to you. You will see a message while booting up that says hit delete or some other key/keystroke to enter setup. After making changes in setup be sure to exit and save changes. You might be better off putting the modem on com4 which would be ok.
