After installing Windows the next driver to install is: Chipset driver

Then install the rest of your drivers:

    Video

    Audio

    Nic

    Modem

You did not say in your post what you had done so I had to start there.

Next would be to go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the sound driver and reboot  and then reinstall the driver  and reboot.

Take a peek in Device Manager and see if there are any flags next to sound devices.

You may want to go to Control Panel, Sounds and make sure you have the proper mode set. (Headphones, speakers,Surround sound etc.)

    Test with dxdiag

    Click start

    Run

    dxdiag

    enter

Go to sound tab and run test
