Direct Memory Access Controller

Can anyone explain why my computer would suddenly detect and try to install a second DMA controller on boot-up? When I check the newly detected/installed DMA Controller using Control Panel/System/Device Manager tab, the second DMA Controller appears under System Devices. However, because it is trying to use the same resources as the already installed DMA controller, it doesn't install successfully and I get the following error message under Properties/General Tab/Device Status group box, "The VDMAD.VXD device loader could not load the device drive. (Code 2)." What is a DMA controller? Is it possible to need two of them? My computer seems to be running okay in spite of this non-functioning controller. If I remove the second controller, my computer just detects it again when I boot up. Any ideas?
