Erratically repeated internet connections

I am having a problem with my XPS T600 running Windows 98 II, Office 2000 Professional repeatedly and for no apparent reason keeps dialing up and connecting to the internet and then counting down about 30 seconds to a disconnect, and then after 0 -15 seconds starting all over again. It doesn't allways happen, but seems to start when I have Outlook 2000 running, minimized or not, or when Atomic Clock is running or both. The only way to get it to stop, for a while, is to shutdown and reboot, (hard or soft). Frequently when it goes down is shows a dialog box saying some program is not responding, but it doesn't have the name of the executable (sp?) at top left of the border of the dialog box, the area is blank??!. Help?! Suggestions on what to look for and where to look would be appreciated. Brad Hull

The problems with your modem dialing are almost certainly caused by one of the two programs you mentioned, or another similar program. Many newer programs will attempt to connect to the Internet at regular intervals for a variety of reasons.

You might want to look at the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, which offers some suggestions:

Modem Attempts to Dial When Windows Starts
