Set a power-on password in c-mos setup. Turn your pc on and the main screen will tell you what key to press to get into setup and set the password here. You might want to set a screensaver password if you leave your pc unattended for short whiles also. You are not totally protected if someone gets into your pc physically and resets the power-on pc, but it sures beats the windows login one.(Pressing the ESC key will bypass the windows login also)

There is an outside program called TheLock by CrashCourse Software. Real good... look for it on Cnet.com.

If you do set a CMOS password.... don't forget it! If you do, you will have to open the case and mess with the jumpers. Is this computer in a home, or dorm? If so, you could just unplug the power cord, and take it with you, or put it somewhere it couldn't be found easily. Another suggestion, have the machine start in MSDOS mode, if the person or persons don't know much about computers, they perhaps wouldn't mess with it if it came up with the plain old C:\> prompt. Open Explorer, Click View, Folder Options. Make sure Show All files is checked. Click on C drive, find MSDOS.sys. Right Click, Open With, Notepad. Look for a line that reads BootGUI=1 change the 1 to a 0 (zero), Save, Exit. It will then start in Dos mode, all you have to do is type WIN. Just a few suggestions, hope this helps.

We all know we need the win.com to load the Windows GUI shell. Now for the tricky part. If the file is gone, you can't start Windows. If we rename the file from win.com to another name say hidden.com, Windows won't start. Anyone booting Windows will get a "win.com not found" error. This should scare them away thinking that they did something wrong. Then how can you boot up? Simple, since the GUI failed to load, you will be still at the command prompt. Just type hidden.com and you are back to Windows. Sneaky....
