Incompatible Video Controller

Hi all, I'm a newcomer to the forums and was hoping to get some opinions on a video error I'm getting when trying to get into the BIOS.

I am using a brand-new Dell Precision T5500 with the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 256MB graphics card it shipped with. I have connected it to a Dell 2405FPW monitor using a DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

If I press [F2] when the machine starts up, or alternatively if I press [F12] and try to go into System Setup, the system hangs a moment and then displays the following error:

"Incompatible video controller. Vesa function 0x4f02 returned AX = 14f"

I searched around and mainly saw this problem happening for laptops, with the conclusion that the video card was busted. However, on this desktop machine, if I do not intervene at all and just let Windows XP boot up, the system has no problem with the video. I only see this error when I try to get into the setup. So, I don't think that the video card is fried, and the monitor is working fine. But I don't know what else would be causing the problem.

Any ideas? Has anyone else seen a problem like this? Input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi

I have few question on this issue.

1)Is your monitor connected directly to the DP to VGA connverter?

2) Without pressing any key like F2 or F12 if you boot your system as per the boot priority did you face this issue?

3) Have you connected any KVM switch?

4) Did you tried with other than your dell monitor?

5)If you have more than one machine on the same configuration did you tested all of them are reporting the same issue or not?

because i also face this issue with KVM connected.

Hi, thanks for your response!

1) Yes, the monitor is connected directly to the DP to VGA converter.

2) No, if I don't press any key, Windows XP will boot up without a problem and display fine.

3) No, I have not connected any KVM switch.

4) Yes, I tried connecting an older Dell monitor (I don't have the model handy just at this moment) and saw the same problem.

5) No, unfortunately, this is the only machine I have of this model.

I did find that if I switched the video card out that I stopped seeing the issue and was able to go into the setup. However, I don't want to toss the video card it came with because that card does seem to work fine booting up into XP. Any ideas other than the KVM possibility?

Out of curiosity, were you able to resolve your issue by disconnecting the KVM switch?

Thanks!

Hi

I have tested your reported issue in my system but unfortunately i don't find this issue in my system it works fine for me.

Regarding your question of disconnecting the KVM switch. Yes, if i remove my KVM switch it was working fine for me.

Coming back to your issue you said it was working without pressing any key F2/F12. then why do you want to press F12/F2?

If you want to enter in BIOS set up press F2 key during the POST itself (During the Dell Logo display in your monitor). if you press F2 in post you will see a message displaying in Yellow color saying Preparing for system setup like that.

Is you system in A03 BIOS version?

Try connecting other than Dell make monitors like samsung, etc....

To folks searching for this issue, this occurs when trying to enter the BIOS while using an external widescreen display.

14f is an old VESA error code for "Could not set video mode".
