I have an E510 and have upgraded the original D805 processor to a D925, but to be truthful, I see no difference in the PC operation and it was a waste of $$.  The E510's motherboards can take up to a D945 processor. I have the 0HJ054 motherboard and it is the only one (from many posts on the old Dell users forum) that will accept upgraded CPU's and not give an "incompatible CPU" error message at boot up (even tho the other compatible CPU's can be used).  You can't up the Bus speed, that is set by the chipset and motherboard.

Best bang is to upgrade the Video card.  I upgraded mine to an 8600GT, which does not require a power supply upgrade.  Many newer PCIe video cards will require a highter wattage power supply (and many newer cards also require an additonal power supply connection to the video card - "PCIe" power connection).

Memory will not really increase the speed of the PC, but it will allow for more programs to be opened at one time or if there is a memory intensive program it will allow more RAM to be used rather than "cache" on the hard drive for temporary storage.  If you upgrade the memory, avoid the Kingston "Value Ram" line as it has shown to be troublesome with Dell's.  Crucial memory is a safe bet as it is guaranteed to be compatible with Dell's.  I have G-Skill memory (4 GB) installed in my E510 and it too works without problems.

We have seen a very large number of E510/5150 power supplies fail, for that reason, if you are going to upgrade you should consider a new power supply, and if you want one of the new video cards, get at least a 500 watt power supply so you can use the "high power" video cards.  The E510 uses a standard ATX power supply, just get a "good grade" power supply, not one of the inexpensive ones.  I have an Antec Tru Power Trio 550 watt in my E510 (there are many others I just got this one as it was on sale at CompUSA when I was looking for a replacement).  The Antec's power supply fan is much quieter than the stock Dell (which was "noisy" in my E510).

Hello. I have just got a second hand dell dimension E510. It runs correctly.  I am happy to see what you have written above as it may concern my problem. in fact, my dell dimension E510 presents following caracteristics:

OS:  Microsoft Windows XP Professional
   Service Pack 3
Processor: DualCore Intel Pentium D 925, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
 Motherboard: Dell Dimension 5150/E510
   Chipset : Intel Lakeport-G i945G
   System memory:   1014 Mo (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM)
   DIMM1:    1 Go DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) (3-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz)
BIOS type   Phoenix (01/08/07)  version A07
Vidéo card   Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family (224 Mo)
    3D accelerator   Intel GMA 950
   System name:   Dell DM051
motherboard name: 0HJ054

the problem is that at the beginning it always shows this "incompatible CPU' error notice " at boot up and  I have to Press F1 to continue . it seems that there are some possibilities to avoid this as you have mentionned that this E510 support correctly a pentium D processor. I have checked in the F2 menu but did not find any way to solve this problem. could you please help me? i would like to mention that the memory used is a DDR2 kingston value ram, but I do not know if this has something to do with the processor compatibility. also, I do not know if this CPU D 925 is the original  or it has been replaced. I was so surprised when I see that a pentium D 820 runs correctly within Dell E510 and it is still possible to upgrade. mine is just I want to escape this "Press F1 to continue..."Please any suggestion are welcomed.

thanks

See my other response.  We have not had any problems, in the past, with upgrading to a D925 with the 0HJ054 motherboard.

We have seen many problems with the Kingston Value Ram, although that will not have any bearing on the Incompatible CPU you are seeing.

What is the best CPU (Processor) upgrade I can get for my Dell Dimension E510 [Please Read]. Sorry to burden you guys with a old pc question, but I am curious and would like your help if you have time. As of right now I have a Dell Dimension e510 with a high quality 400 watt PSU made by Corsair. I have a ATI 512MB 4670 graphics card. I also have 4 GB of RAM. My current CPU is a Intel Pentium 4 630 HT 3.00 GHz Prescott. The CPU has a Socket 775 LGA. Front Side Bus is 800 MHz. I never upgraded my motherboard, never plan too, and I rather not. I am just looking for a better (the best) CPU to upgrade to. Does anyone know what is the best CPU I can upgrade to without upgrading my motherboard. I know I will not be able to upgrade to a duel core and anything above that. But I heard that some people with Dell E510s were able to update to a fast Pentium D processor. Would I be able to upgrade to a Pentium D processor even though I have a Pentium 4 right now? Will my 400 watt power supply be enough to handle a faster CPU (the link of my power supply is below)? Can it be any Pentium D processor or does it have to be a Prescott. Tell me the fastest and best CPU I can upgrade too. Would I have to buy a new heat sink or can I just clean out my old heat sink and reuse it. I know I will have to re apply the thermal grease. I put some links of people in these forums upgrading their CPU in a Dell E510, that might help you guys answer my question (I was not to sure about those because they all ready had Pentium Ds, while I only have a Pentium 4). If I cannot upgrade to a Pentium D that is better than my processor, what better Pentium 4 can I upgrade too? If you can give me a specific link to the processor that would my really cool, but the processor name and maybe with the spec information would be nice too. I rather not take a chance on trying a new processor to see if it works because I will probably have to try Ebay or Amazon.com, and very few accept returns. Let me know if you guys need any more kind of information.

Mother board model is 0WG262

The "D" should work, up to a D945, HOWEVER, with that part number motherboard you will always get an "incompatible processor" at power on and have to press F1 to continue with the boot.  This is according to the many posts we had about upgrading E510/5150 CPU's on the old Dell users forum and what users found out.

Do you think the Intel Pentium D 945 3.4GHZ/4M/800 SL9QQ should work on my system (Link is at bottom).  I am thinking of bidding on it on eBay.   By the way, do you think it would help at on gaming performance?  I usually play World of WarCraft on my ATI 512MB 4670, with 4GB of RAM, Pentium 4 3.0 GHz/2M/800M, and a good cable internet connection.  I used to play on a 305 Watt PSU, now I just go a high quality 400 Watt Corsair PSU (Link is at bottom) but I still have not played World of WarCraft on it yet.  I get very low frames when I am in intense playing areas(areas where you play with a lot of people, more than 20 people usually, sometimes 50).  However, when I am usually in a open area with landscape and with not many people I can play all most maxed out with 60+ frames.  Would upgrading to that CPU help out my gaming performance in intense areas?  Will a 400 Watt PSU be fine for that CPU I might bid on(by the way, the PSU is more than enough for my system as it is now and my graphics card, I checked).  Basically, does that processor I might upgrade to use a lot more power than my Pentium 4 I have right now.

I upgraded my E510 from a D805 to a D925 and saw NO difference in the speed or operation.  I didn't see any difference on benchmarking tests to justify the upgrade.  I'm using the stock power supply with the D925.  I had a 550 watt power supply installed in the E510 but robbed it for another PC.  I doubt that changing to a D945 (or any dual core) will really help considering the CPU you have now.

The E510 is not a gaming PC and I don't really think whatever you do will make it a gaming PC.  A video card is probably the best upgrade for gaming.

That Pentium D I am thinking of getting is better than the Pentium 4 3.8GHz right?
