X800 Display problems

Sorry this is kinda long for a first post.

I just got an 8400 with the X800SE over the weekend, and then spent a part of the weekend reading these forums, sadly.

When I first booted up, on the dark DELL background, things looked fine.  However, the text was a bit grainy.  I bumped the resolution to 1280x1024 and 32bit.  Still grainy.  Changed from a dark background to a light one and I am getting shadowing on the images.  There are black (or dark pixels) instead of shadows.  So I uninstalled the Dell drivers, and loaded the ATI 4.10 Catalyst drivers.  Same issues.  Boot to safe mode, uninstall all those drivers and go back to the disc for the Dell drivers.  Still no better quality.  Uninstall those drivers again and got the Omega drivers.  SUCCESS!  Beautiful image quality.  Games load with no issues, videos aren’t grainy. All my problems are solved.. or so I thought.

This morning, I restarted my machine and it is back to grainy.  The text is pixilated.  Backgrounds are showing artifacts.  NOTHING changed from last night at 1AM when it was working fine to 10AM when I powered it on!  I took a screenshot, but it displays fine on my laptop (emailed it to myself).  I know its not the monitor because it looks fine with the old system (geforce 2 looks better than my X800 and it also displays my laptop fine).

Anyone have any suggestions?

System as follows

Dell 8400

P4 3Ghz

X800SE card (ARGH!!!)

512MB Ram

250GB HD

DVD-ROM

16x DVD Burner

XP SP2 (could that be a problem??)

What type of monitor are you using with the X800 SE an LCD or CRT?

Maybe you just got a bad card.I also have an 8400 with the x800 se and it performs very well.I run Far Cry and Doom3 with no problems at all and I have settings on very high.I hope you get your problem resolved.By the way I am using the 4.10 drivers.

I have a 21" Nokia 445x-Pro monitor. (CRT)  I think i can eliminate the monitor, because it runs fine on the other system with A Geforce 2 GTS card.

I guess Im leaning towards bad card now..   Any other ideas?

Maybe you need specific drivers for the monitor since it didn't ship with your new system?  Does XP recognize the exact monitor or is just defaulting to some generic model?

Well, 2 hours and 3 technicians later, a technician is coming out to my house to replace the card.  Dont know why they couldnt ship it to me, but thats OK.  Planning on calling Customer Care tomorrow to see if I can just upgrade for $X dollars and be done with it.

    YAY!  Problems WILL be fixed!

    SprungMonkey,

In the future, if you want just the part and not the onsite technician, tell Dell you want a P.O.S. (parts only service) instead of ND (next day service).

Update!  Tech showed up this morning, took one look at the display and agreed somethign was wrong.  He snapped open teh case, pulled the old one out and popped in teh new one.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!  The display was 3x BRIGHTER!  The artifacting was GONE!  AWESOME!
