XPS BSOD, Quicktime, Creative, SATA issue
Hi, I have opened a case with Dell support on this, but they seem as puzzled as I do. I should say that I work with databases and do some programming and occasional tech support in my job, so I'm not completely lost around computers, but I'm not the greatest when it comes to hardware. I have an XPS 710 running Vista Ultimate. Ever since I got it, Quicktime and iTunes videos didn't play correctly. I saw in the forums here and at iTunes that this was probably related to the NVIDIA Serial ATA controller. A few months ago, I noticed in Windows update that there was an update for NVIDIA Serial ATA controller, so I ran it. Soon after, I started getting frequent BSOD, reboots, freezes, for no apparent reason. Most of them happened while I was not at the computer (which runs 24/7.) So, I did a system restore, and the problems went away, but the Quicktime/iTunes problem, which was fixed by the update, became a problem again. I just tried reinstalling the serial ata update again this weekend, and it once again fixed the Quicktime/iTunes problem, but the reboots and BSODs returned. The one BSOD I noticed in front of me today reference dxgkrnl.sys and what looks like Hex. I should mention that my Creative SB driver was modified by a Dell online technician back in May because my rear speakers weren't putting out any sound. I don't know if this modification could be the reason why the update worked for everyone else but not for me. Seems unlikely, but anything is possible. Any ideas?

After a few days of running pretty stable, I got home from work today, found the computer at the welcome screen "locked" as I normally like to keep it when I'm gone. I entered my password as usual, but after that, everything went down hill. My mouse moved just fine, but I clicked on an icon, the program didn't launch, got the Vista swirly hour glass replacement thing, kept waiting, nothing. Tried CTRL ALT DEL, but no luck. Mouse kept moving just fine, but couldn't click on anything or do anything with the keyboard. Held down the power button until it powered down. Brought it back up and logged in again. Same problem. Started up again and was fine for about 4 hours until just now. Came over to the computer to find it with a blue screen showing kernel_data_inpage_error. Any ideas?725

Just thought I'd post this in case someone else is having the same problem and is following my struggles and progress. I read somewhere to disable NCQ for SATA drives when having the hanging/freezing problems. I'm trying that now and it already feels faster and more stable. Crossing my fingers. Oh, I also reinstalled my sb x-fi drivers last night. Don't think that helped though. I was led to the NCQ idea after seeing the following entry in my System log under Event Viewer at the time of a hang/freeze that happened tonight (which, but the way, I waited out for a few minutes and recovered from.....previously I had just given up after 10 seconds and held down the power button). Chris, I went to Device Manager. Under Storage Controllers, I have NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller listed 3 times. Right-clicked on the first one then went to properties. On Port 0 and Port 1 tabs, I unchecked "Enable Command Queuing." No idea if this is right or not, but tech support hasn't figured it out yet, other than to repeat all the things I've already thought of. Got the idea from the following two sites. 115 hours of uptime as of right now since last Blue Screen of Death, hang, or reboot. Still getting a strange warning in the event log about once a day though. Any insight into this would be appreciated. Looks like it's related to the nvidia controllers, so it could be related.
