the green light is on with the adapter, it just does not charge at all. so, i should buy a new adapter... do i need to buy a whole other adapter from dell for like $70? is there a way to replace the battery without getting a new cord?

First step is to replace the adapter. If you still are having problems making a connection then it is most likely the jack that needs to be replaced. Does it power on with A/C adapter only. Is the power light on the A/C adapter. These are things you should check. If the unit powers on with the A/C adapter and simply does not charge the battery then your rechargeable battery is probably going out.

They do'nt come with out a cord here. You could buy it from a third party here, but you may want to give parts-people a call to verify that this adapter is correct for it is not listed in the compatability list.

Given the age of the system, call Dell - they'll replace the adapter or mainboard as necessary under warranty.
