Battery recalibration message on boot up

Question

I have an Inspiron 1200 that after receiving the battery recalibration message on boot up, I followed the

instructions to discharge the battery. The battery icon showed empty or zero but the text underneath said

1% charged. It did not seem to discharge further so I plugged in the adapter and charged it to 100%.

The problem is that on each boot up the "battery recalibration is required....." message comes up.

How do I eliminate this message?

You have to discharge the battery completely by letting the laptop shut off after power exhaustion while running on the battery.  Obviously, don't work on the laptop during this time so that you don't lose any work when the computer does shut down suddenly.

balaji, thanks for your reply. Your suggestion did not work for me. I let the battery discharge until the laptop shut off. Then plugged in the A/C adapter - the laptop stayed off so I let it charge about 20 mimutes, then pushed the start button. It now booted up and I received the same message as before

that recallibration is needed - push F1 to continue or Esc to exit recallibration. Any ideas?

What happens when you hit F1 and follow the instructions that follow (I don't even know whether there are instructions to follow, I am just guessing)?  Do you always hit esc at that prompt to continue with the boot?

When I hit F1 there is a message to unplug the A/C adapter and discharge to empty.

There is an diagram of a battery showing the level of charge and text below indicating

% charged. When the level drops to 0 and the text says 0% charged I plugged in the charger

- charged to 100% then hit Esc. The laptop booted up - but the next time I booted up I

got the battery requires recalibration message. This time I hit F1, unplugged the charger and let

the battery discharge until the laptop shut off per your suggestion. Then I plugged in the charger

and after about 20 minutes, pressed the restart button. It then showed the same battery requires recalibration message. This time I hit Esc to complete the bootup.

This is something I found on the gateway support site when I googled the message you are seeing.  I don't know whether your BIOS has a setting for battery learning, but it might be worth looking into.

At this point, I am stumped and have no idea where this message is coming from and how to make it go away.  If you do find a solution, please post back so that others can learn from it.  If not, you might just have to live with hitting esc everytime you boot up.

balaji.ramanat  Thanks for trying.  I don't know of any BIOS battery learning - will keep searching and use the Esc key in the meantime.
