BOOTMGR is Compressed

In desperation a friend has begged me to fix his Inspiron Mini (1018, I think).   When you try and boot it, all you get is BOOTMGR Compressed, Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart (which does nothing, of course).

It has no optical drive, and he has no windows DVDs or thumbdrives.

There is a product key on the bottom of the machine, but I haven't been able to find anyplace to do anything with it (ie, download an .iso from Dell for a thumbdrive.

All the Googling I've done says the fix is in a Windows 7 thumbdrive...

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Hi,

Thank you for reaching us.

This being a "Netbook" , These models does not have an inbuilt DVD drive, however we can use an external DVD drive to boot from the disc and reinstall Windows.

It is best that we confirm there is no hardware failure before we troubleshoot the BOOTMGR issue by running a diagnostics.

To enter diagnostics, Keep tapping F12 on the startup Dell logo that comes as soon you press the power button.

Select "Diagnostics" from the list, Run it completely and let us know if it passes, Else please reply with the Error message and validation code, we shall take it further.

Thank you
