Caps Lock as blinking error
I have an Inspiron 1521.
My young son hit the keyboard while my daughter was on the web. The screen went blank, the power button was still lit, but nothing happened. I pressed the power button for 5 seconds and it shut down. After waiting a couple of minutes, I hit the power button again. The power lit up and the caps lock indicator started flashing. After 30 seconds or so, the laptop powered down. I tried again and it did the same thing.
Of course the laptop's out of warranty and Dell wants to charge me for a phone diagnostic. Before I try that or go to a local repair shop, what should I try?

Not a laptop expert, but quick bit of searching found this:

One of the memory modules is under the keyboard, the other accessible from the bottom of the laptop - I suppose it's possible he whacked it hard enough to loosen or damage one or the other. See your service manual below on how to access the modules to try and reseat them:
