Dell Precision M4700 doesn't recognize new battery

Question

I have Dell Precision M4700. It has original 87Wh battery (Type R7PND). But as the laptop has been used for several years now (4.5 years), the battery is getting old (lasts about 20 minutes). So, I bought a new battery. This time the type is: FV993 (97 Wh), Dell original. The problem is, the laptop doesn't recognize the battery. I even replaced the new battery (with another instance of the same type).

How it is not working. When I put the battery in, the battery led starts blinking yellow. When I check in Windows, it shows that there is no battery. I tried turning power off and took the battery out for a while and put the battery back in. Still the same.

Now, when I unplug the adapter (and the battery is in) when the power is on, it works on battery. Windows recognizes the battery and everything kind of works. When I plug the adapter back on, the batter is still recognized, but it says "not charging".

When I turn the power off and start the computer on battery only, it works and no led is blinking - everything seems normal. And when I plug the power cable back up, the charges the battery.

Can anyone give me some ideas, why it is like that? Is the new battery type wrong for my laptop? In specs it says that this battery suits for my laptop.

I have upgraded BIOS etc. Even run diagnostics - but as I had power cable on, it didn't recognize the battery at all.

Are you buying these directly from Dell or a 3rd party? Sometimes the system might not recognize the battery correctly if it doesn't match up/ have very similar specs to the official Dell one. Do you still have the old battery you replaced? I would recommend trying it just to see if the old battery is even recognized. If it isn't there might be something wrong with the board, but if it is... then the batteries are possibly faulty, however it is odd that 2 wouldn't work.

Let me know if you can test the old battery and how that turns out (if you can). Then I can see if there is anything else we can try. I don't normally work on these system models but am very familiar with laptops etc.

Thanks for the answer! Yes, I still have the old battery and it is recognized. I bought the battery from a 3rd party. The battery itself says its Dell's original. I will check with the seller.

Hi Agsel,

That sounds like the best choice (to contact them), since the old battery is recognized correctly there is a good chance there is a fault with them, and not the board which is great news.
