Dell Precision M6400 CPU Replacement
Hi All, I just purchased this laptop and I'm thinking of doing several upgrades to take it to its potential. One of these upgrades is to replace the 2.80ghz with the 3.06ghz which I think is the highest one I can put in this machine. If I'm lucky I'm actually hoping to score a quad instead of a duo processor. The laptop came with two 2G ram sticks which I am changing. I've already ordered two 4G sticks and plan to order another two as soon as I can.
Can anyone tell me if there are any other changes I need to make to to allow the laptop to use this cpu? Will the original fans work or do I also need to change them, or anything else?
Thanks

Hi Budabear,
Upgrading the processor and memory is more than enough. You can customize Dell Precision M6400 with Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X9100 (6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) and Precision M6400 has 4 SODIMM slots. The system accepts a memory capacity ranging from 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB. The memory type accepted is DDR3 1066 MHz SODIMM only. The computer supports a maximum of 16GB of memory when installed with four 4GB DIMMs.
The Original fans will work on this system.

They may be QX9100 or QX9300, but they're not Q9100 etc.

Thanks very much for the quick and precise answer. Perhaps you can help me with something else. I ordered 16GB of ram this morning so they will be here next week. In the mean time I've taken 2x 4GB of ram from my E6410 which is the same ram and can't seem to get it to work. When I opened the back I don't even see where Dimms A&C go. I've tried both separately and switched slots and the laptop doesn't get past the Dell screen.
Any suggestions?
Thanks Again

The Q-series are desktop processors - they will not work in a mobile system.

When I upgrade the processor I'm hoping to use something more along the lines of an Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9450 providing that will work. Or possibly even an Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9650.

Thank You! You saved me from a big mistake. Many of the auctions are not being labeled correctly. I just checked the service tag number on one of them and found it to be mislabeled.
