Up until a few days ago everything was fine. Now I turn my laptop and have this distorted blackness at the bottom of my screen.

This looks like a physically damaged screen -- run the built-in diagnostic (hold D through powerup). If you see the same fault, as is likely -- the screen needs to be replaced.
