Erratic Mouse

I bought a used C800 about a year ago. Within a few uses, the mouse would behave erratically, usually on startup.

Sometimes the cursor completely disappeared and I would have to move my finger quickly across or around the touch pad to find it. Once found, if I broke contact with the touch pad, it would go back to its hiding place. Usually, a quick tap with a finger on the touch pad got it back in use.

This AM while booting with the laptop on the docking station and an external mouse attached, it did its act again, but gave me real grief while trying to get it to work with the external mouse. After at least 15 minutes of playing with it, I finally got it to work. Can anyone give me some pointers as to what I can do to correct this problem?

The notebook seems to work fine otherwise.

It might help to know which operating system you have installed, but for starters:

    -USB or PS2 mouse?
-Clean installation of the OS since receipt, or are you working with someone else's old installation mess?
-Touchpad/track stick drivers installed?  If so, and if you're working with Windows XP, you might find that things work better without them.  Mine does.
-Is the BIOS up to date?  If not, it should be.

OS is Windows 2000 Pro. The mouse that is giving me the problem is my touch pad.
The OS was installed from scratch, new when we got the notebook. Bios is current.

This only happens sporadically but seems to be getting worse.

    Hi Alk,

This could be an issue with the pointer stick in the middle of your keyboard not being seated properly.

A quick way to find out is to disable the pointer stick. Control Panel->Mouse->Devices Disable the pointer stick.

If you don't see the options when you open up the Mouse icon, you may need to update your input device drivers. You can do that from support.dell.com, choose drivers & downloads and enter in your service tag. Install the input device drivers, probably "Alps".

known issue with the "C" series laptops.  it a h/w issue with the touchpad. i go thru more of these that you can imagine (i work at a large Ins. Co. with loads of C610s). google pointer drift c600/610 and see how many others are aving the same problem.

we usually replace the palmrest/touchpad assy. if re-seating the cable on the MB doesn't solve it

    good luck
