Error Code 0142??1!? what does this mean?

after droping my  inspirion laptop and getting a blue screen, it will not boot up.  the dell screen starts to load then it says "A disk error has occurred" ctrl alt delete to restart.

I do that and it does the same thing.  I then ran the self diagnostic test and got the results

 Error Code: 0142

Msg: Error code 2000-0142

Hard Drive 1- Self test unsuccessful

Status:79

What does all this mean?? Will i need a new hard drive? and if so is what is currently on the drive lost?

any help would be great!! Thanks!!

Yes, the drive is toast and you will need a new one.  You may or may not be able to recover data yourself - to try, purchase a 2.5" USB 2.0 drive case of the appropriate type (SATA or PATA) and mount the drive in it.   Attach it to a working system and see what you can recover.  If you can't get the data back yourself, there are drive recovery services that can probably still retrieve your data - Drive Savers, Ontrack, etc.  They're expensive - budget $2,500 or so - but they can usually get the data from a failed drive.

You need something like this -- remove the drive and install it in the external case:

Attach to a working system and see if you can read some or all of your data.

Something like this

www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

The hardest part of this is removing the drive -- you likely will want to have a replacement on hand before you remove the old drive, as removing and installing the drive on this model is far from easy:
