Error Code 0142??1!? what does this mean?
after droping my inspirion laptop and getting a blue screen, it will not boot up. the dell screen starts to load then it says "A disk error has occurred" ctrl alt delete to restart.
I do that and it does the same thing. I then ran the self diagnostic test and got the results
Error Code: 0142
Msg: Error code 2000-0142
Hard Drive 1- Self test unsuccessful
Status:79
What does all this mean?? Will i need a new hard drive? and if so is what is currently on the drive lost?
any help would be great!! Thanks!!

Yes, the impact damaged the drive. If the system still recognizes the drive, remove the drive, mount it in a 2.5" external USB case, and attach it to a working system. You may be able to recover at least some of the data. If the system fails to read the drive at all, you'll need a data recovery service -- but that option won't be inexpensive (figure a minimum of about $1,000 just for a basic recovery).

What i have done to my Dell with the same problem is, i have attach it directly in mg desktop via SATA to recover my files in the drive. I don't recommend this but this is only my suggestion, since this works for me and i have personally tested it. But the risk will be in you personally if you decide to try this method.
Thanks..

I have Dell studio xps 1340 , with window 7 32 bit on it. Recently, i had to format my laptop and after reinstalling windows 7(32), i ran dell diagnostic test.
All test were passed except for:
Hard drive DSTshort test
giving error code 0142
msg: Error code 2000-0142
hard drive 1 self test unsuccessful status 79
But i am able open windows 7, have not received any problem working with it. But shutting down is a problem, infact it takes forever to shutdown. It does not shutdown. Is there a problem with my hard drive???
