Keyboard Error in MS-DOS

Hi all
I have been given a "Dell Latitude XPi CD 150ST" laptop, ok it's not the fastest thing on the planet these days but i got it for nothing and it works great except for the following error.
In "MS-DOS Prompt" when i want to type the backslash (\) i get a hash (#) instead. If i hold the "Shift" key i get a ~ sign.

I had the keyboard set to "English (British)" which correct for me, but a friend said to change it to "English (United States)" but it still does the same thing.

It works ok when you are in MS Office Word or Notepad, but in dos or the ms-dos prompt i cannot get the \ sign which is one of the thing i need most.

I have tried using the hash (#) instead but i get a 3 or the £ sign holding "Shift" key.

I also tried turning the "Num Lock" off but it still does the same thing.

I have just found out something, when i connect a external keyboard to the PS2 Mouse/Keyboard connection at the rear everything works ok and i get both  \  / keys in MS-DOS too. it's only happens when i use the laptop keys.

it's running Win98SE and works well except for this problem.

I guy in another forum said to download the keyboard drivers from Dell, what do you think and if so from where as i don't have a Dell Support ID or whatever you call it.

thanks

The keyboard itself may be the wrong one. Downloading drivers or changing settings in windows will not affect anything in dos, so changing these would be a waste of time.

it's the keyboard on th Dell Laptop that's doing this. when i connect an extra/external keyboard to the laptop everything works ok.

do you know the link or where to go to get drivers for this laptop keyboard.

I realise its the laptop keyboard, not the external keyboard thats the problem. If you search through the Product Support section at the top of this page, you should be able to find any drivers you need. On that note, there are most likely no keyboard drivers. And as i've mentioned above, this most likely will not fix your problem anyway. Change the actual keyboard.
