pointer cursor uncontrollable

I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Inspiron 8500. My mouse is a Microsoft Notebook Optical.
The pointer cursor constantly moves to the top right or bottom left of the screen and cannot be recovered - when using either the mouse or the touchpad. I have tried changing the pointer speed but it did not correct the problem.
How do I solve this problem?
Thanks

I hope you still under warranty. this cases you have to update the touchpad driver, flash the bios. you already tried changing the sensitivity. but looks like you will need to replace touchpad or keyboard.

try going into the Device Manager and disabling the touchpad and the pointing stick, since you're using an external mouse. On my Inspiron 8100, these show as "Synaptics PS/2 port pointing device". It's possible that setting their sensitivity to "heavy" (totally separate from "speed" settings)might help and that's not as drastic.
