TV out

So with most new TVs, could I plug in the laptop and have it in black and white?

Max resolution: 1280 x 800

I think it's the entry level LCD (he didn't choose to upgrade it)

As far as I can remember, the dark scenes looked decent.

Are you still under warranty? Dell should let you send the laptop in so they can fix the screen..maybe you could ask to talk to a supervisor/manager.

Its possible to hook it into a tv that has the ability to show s-video transmissions, in my experience that is normally widescreen tvs that do that.

You said your dad has the same machine, have you tested dvds out on it or any other type of video, did they look ok or fuzzy or blocky at all.

What are the specs of your dads machine, if you read the post topic below yours you will find mine and im having problems of my own.

So I won't be able to plug my laptop into the TV if it isn't widescreen?

I've watched a few DVDs on my dad's laptop, and they look great.

His specs:

Intel Pentium M 1.60 Ghz
512 MB RAM
40 GB Hard Drive
Integrated Video
CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Have you tried contacting Dell tech support about your problem?

Sorry I should be a bit more specific, In a lot of cases a widescreen tvs are the only tvs with a (SVHS)
(name may vary) signal, you have the normal scart signals eg: ext:1 & ext:2 which come in on black and white
with an svideo cable, so if you think your tv has a scart cable you have about a 50:50 chance of it coming up in colour,

its almost a 100 % guarantee for widescreen tvs because they almost always have the s-video signal, the equipment you will need
should cost anything from 15 - 20 so not too expensive, in almost any decent electronic store.

Now back to my problem, im fighting with customer care at the moment, but as usual hitting a brick wall,

do you remember or know what type of lcd screen came with your dads machine?

Basically i will be able to figure it out if you can tell me the highest resolution you can set the machine to on your dads machine:

is it:

1280 x 800 or 1680 x 1050 or 1920 x 1200

when you were watching dvds on it, in scenes that were dark like night scenes or during the credits was the quality still good?

I think Dell has a 30 day satisfaction guarantee, you might ask them about that.

If you said it works fine on an external monitor, you're right, it's probably the LCD and not the graphics card. I just watched a short bit of a movie on my dad's laptop, and it looks fine, no blurryness and nothing is remotely fuzzy in dark areas, it looks like it should look.

With any tv that has a scart cable socket it will show up in black and white,
if it has the s signal you will get it in colour, most new tvs should really come up in colour, it would be stupid for them not to and of course there is absolutely no problem hooking in an external monitor into the machine as another option, they work without any problems at all.

The screen i picked for the 6000 was the same as your dads, its the entry level one, which technically should ahve been enough, thats all i bought on the last last laptop i had and videos were perfect.

Ok basically whats happening on mine is that on any dark surfaces in a movie whether it be a night sky or even the walls in a house or furniture during a movie, basically anything that isnt pure white there is a look, it looks like bad reception on a bad tv transmission, fuzz.

Im still in warranty, i got the machine only a few days ago, i thought it might have been the graphics card which ive requested now from dell but i now have a suspiction its actually the screen but im not sure.

You said dark scenes were decent, now i know nothing is perfect anyway but did it look anything like a bad fuzzy snow storm at all?

Perfect, thats exactly what i needed to hear, ive been trying to get a proper answer from people for days,

well at least I know its not a design flaw with the entire 6000 series, Ill get in touch tomorrow with customer care again and see if i can sort this issue out, if this gets solved the rest of the machine is absolutely perfect. Im still under warranty and i really dont want to have to give it back, its so much faster than my old machine, anyway thank you so much.
