I'm looking to buy a used XPS. Is there a way that I can check to see if the unit has had a history of trouble before I buy someone elses problem?

Ask the seller - and be sure he or she is willing to transfer ownership to your name, AND that there's a warranty remaning - given the problems with the nVidia chips in this model, there's a higher than average chance you'll need it - and remember that one out of four notebooks need a major repair within three years to begin with -- that's before you pile the nVidia fault on top.

All laptops fail at the rate of about 1 in 4 in three years, regardless of brand - that is, one in four will need a major repair in that period of time.
