xps1710 graphics memory fault

my xps decided to pack in last night with no warning. fault was: on boot up you get the windows screen, with green dotted lines running down the back in bars, then nothing, black screen and thats it. it will boot in safe mode with very large icons and it will boot to the diagnostics. I spent seven hrs running the diagnostics, all ok except it failed on the vesa, svga video memory test, cannot write or read error code 4E53:0119

all the time theses tests are going on you can see vertical lines in the back ground. I have been informed its the nvidia GEforce GO 7950 GTX memory that has failed.  my warranty ended 4 weeks ago. can this be repaired? (the memory on the card)

can I buy the card 3rd party? if so were from. any info on this would be helpfull

thanks

The only cheap third party i have seen for dell video cards is ebay(if you trust the seller)

Yes you can fix it yourself.

From Dell or a reputable seller with a fixed place of business, expect $500 or so.

Yes, replacing the video card is not difficult but beware. My new one failed straight after replacing it. Dell then fitted a second new one, and a new mother board.

If your warranty only finished 1 month ago try your luck with the tech support line first. Depending on the agent there should be a 1 month grace period for Out of warranty systems. Espically if its the 1710 with a dodgy video card.

If you don't want to repeat the problem, make sure the replacement system comes with a 3 year warranty, minimum.

"considering going through dell for the repair, but I am struggling to get a reply on the repair warranty, I had this verbally from Deli and I got a quote via email but no mention of the warranty on the repair. I have emailed him back 3 times and he is not responding. I also want a secure way to pay and not verbally to to somebody in another (poor) country, no affence to India or the people, but there has been a lot of C.C fraud lately. very poor DELL service I think"

Camscan - I take it your in the UK?  If so you are under EU consumer law.

If you purchase faulty goods, you are entitled to seek one of the three forms of redress - a repair, replacement or a refund.  If a repair is offered and accepted, then it should be permanent. If not, and the same fault occurs again, the buyer is entitled to seek another form of redress.  This is your right no mater what Dell's service contact may say.  This right is for as long as it is reasonable to expect the to machine last up to 5-6years.  Dell will offer you 90 days on a repair iirc.

yes I am in the UK. I have seen this on the web regarding warranty. I mentioned this too them and they are like robots, they just keep repeating them selfs then at the end they say "thank you for choosing Dell" "and have a nice day" at 11pm in the evening

its all a script.

They are like robots I am going through the same issues as you - I'm looking for a third video card from them after the other ones failed.  I am writting to them quoting The Sale of Goods and supply of Services act as they have failed to respond to my email.  I think if I take further action ie small claims court, I might get a response.....
