2405 High Pitched Squeal

Does anybody else have a high pitched squeal on their 2405fpw monitor? I just ordered one, heard a squeal about 2 days after recieving it. Then I recieved a new one, and it has a louder squeal than the first one. It's not a mind-blowing volume, but a subtle and constant squeal. I probably hear it more because I'm alone in a home-office and it's very quiet and pushed into a corner on my desk. I'm debating on returning it for a refund because I'm somewhat sensitive to the squeal. If everyone elses is super quiet, then I may just try my luck at another RMA if they let me. VERY ANNOYING! :-)

I had my 2405FPW for like 2 months, the firmware version is 2.0
Until recently I occasionally hear high pitch noise from somewhere while my room is really quite, tried to figure out the source but no idea. All of a sudden I go unplug the power cord of my 2405FPW... BINGO. Then I go search Google for 2405FPW high pitch noise, here I am. Got this page with many people with the same problem.

The noise isnt that serious... well... if you dont notice it, but you know how annoying that high pitch noise could be. Now I'm thinking if I should get a replacement unit or not, becoz except that high pitch noise, everything is just perfect. too perfect.

That's too bad.  If I were you, call Dell and complain about it and see if you can get a RMA for it.  The price is too high for you to be displeased with the product.  Satisfaction guaranteed.

I'm still thinking about it. I dont want to get it replaced with a unit with dead pixel... that's why. =(

Do it! Follow my posts in this thread. I called the support number. They send you another monitor without having to return the one you have first. So if you are not happy with the one they send, you can send IT back and get another. There is no risk. I ended up keeping the new one, and ,you know what, if this one develops a squeal I will do it again and again as long as I get to choose which one to keep and I am not without a monitor for any amount of time.

If you have a monitor that squeals simply replace the monitor. If you are worried about getting a replacement with dead pixels there’s no guarantee that your present monitor won’t develop a dead pixel anyway. My 2405FPW purchased last summer, developed a dead pixel (black spot) last week about 2-inches down from the exact center of the screen.

My original 2405FPW had the high pitched squeal and I found that far more annoying than the dead pixel, though I would prefer to have neither.

I recently (April 2006) made the mistake of purchasing one of these units. It is an A04 model, made in Hungary. The unit makes a variety of noises, including the high-pitched squeal.

The backlight dimmer also makes a noise on any brightness other than full.

Dell is sending a replacement, I'll let you know if it fixes them problem.

I got an A04 model / March 2006 / Made in Hungary a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the high pitched whine after a few days or so. A replacement arrived today (also A04 / March 2006 / Hungary) and the whine was there from the very first time I turned it on, although it is slightly quieter I think. It's not a major problem so I'll probably only send it back if it gets any louder, though it's a bit annoying that so many of the 2405FPW's seem to be affected by this.

Following up from jknotten's post, I've also noticed that there is a lower pitch buzzing noise when the brightness is anything but full, although this is very quiet indeed and only really audible when I put my ear directly on the monitor.

The replacement came today. It is quieter than the original, although it has been a relatively cool day, so I'm not entirely sure whether the problem is completely gone. I think it gives out a high-pitched noise, but it is so high a frequency I can't really tell if it exists or not.

My original was A04 / made in Hungary / March 2006 / C8A, which was quite noisy.

The replacement is A04 / made in Hungary / March 2006 / B8F, which is quieter.

Also, the replacement subjectively felt a bit heavier - although this may be my imagination.

I wonder if the last three letters there mean anything?

Same for me, C8A replaced with B8F, and B8F is marginally quieter. You gonna send yours back? Other than this, I have no complaints, picture quality is great.

I reckon I'll keep this one. The screen's a bit darker than the first, but to be honest the first one was way to bright anyway. The colour resolution on this monitor is also superior to the previous one.

I have been impressed with Dell's customer service, which (apart from the initial delay of waiting in a queuing system), has been excellent. It is heartening to see that they do not have any qualms about honouring their warranty.

Well, I've got a brand new 2045FPW (revision A05 - built in China, 04/06) and it definitely has the annoying noise problem. It's very hard to explain. I wouldn't call it a squeal, it's more of a faint (but maddening) high-pitch sharp sound (more of a whine).

I don't think mine is as loud as some others that have posted here as I can only hear it if I am sitting in front of the display, not when you first walk in the room.

It's a very annoying whine. It sounds like the built-in flash module in those disposable 35mm cameras. You know, you press the flash button and when it warms up it makes that faint but high-pitched on-going sound until you snap the picture? That's the best way to describe it (at least for me and my panel).

Lowering or raising the brightness makes zero difference.  The only thing that stops the noise is to shut the display off! :smileytongue:

It's definitely going back. I can deal with the very narrow viewing angle and the slight color stepping (with gradients), but I simply will not tolerate noise of any kind in my quiet home office. It's a shame too. This display is large and shows amazing color and brightness (and a steal at $640 with the coupons I had).

I wonder who's to blame for this? Dell who placed the order from the ODM and didn't check the design for flaws or Samsung (panel maker) or BenQ (bezel, encasing maker).

Sowelu that's exactly the same sound as I get, bit worrying that A05/China version is also affected. I think I've got used to the noise a bit, but I'm still gonna send it back one last time and see if it makes any difference. The screen is so big and bright that I'm willing to live with a little noise, as long as it is inaudible when the monitor is off :)

I reckon it's a problem with the transformer, especially as there is an additional sound which varies with the screen brightness (although that's not the high pitch sound). My brother has a Dell machine with a 17" Dell LCD and that also seems to make a high pitched whine (he only noticed when I pointed it out), so perhaps my ears are just more sensitive...

I got my 3rd 2405FPW today, very good service (rang at 4:45pm yesterday and got it exchanged this morning)

This time they sent me an A01/Hungary/August 2005 one (perhaps because it has been more than 2 weeks since I bought the monitor?) Anyway, this one has no high-pitched whine, but a much louder medium-pitched whine. This sound goes away when brightness is 100%, making the monitor almost silent. Anything less than 95% brightness and it starts making the sound, fairly constant volume between 0% and 95% brightness. However, 100% brightness is just too bright, so this monitor is gonna have to go back. Come on Dell sort this out!

So I received my replacement 2405FPW yesterday (they over-nighted me a new display - Dell SMB). I am happy to report that this one is SILENT! No whine, hiss, or any other noise that will drive you mad just by sitting in front of your computer. It's the same Rev (A05 Made in China) as the first. Also, there are no dead pixels where the first displayed showed 2.

However, there is another problem introduced with this replacement. The brightness (or white uniformity) seems slightly off. The right side of the screen is slightly brighter than the left which is more noticeable with white backgrounds (IE, Outlook). It looks like a gradual but slight fade as you travel from the right, to the (lower) left of the screen. Here's a pic of it (looks more noticeable in person - hard to capture it):

Not sure if this is a deal breaker or not at this point. :smileyindifferent:

Message for DOMIN8 and RSL_Mongoose ...

Would appreciate you guys

        1)    Not using this forum (inappropriately) to childishly abuse each other.

         2)    Spelling correctly and phrasing your sentences and paragraphs in correct

                grammatical form.

        3)   Discussing, only, issues concerning the Dell  2405 monitor.

Let's concentrate on the real issues:  Dell's failure, after more than twelve months, to

acknowledge and fix an obvious defect within the 2405, and the disappearance, months

ago, of the one-time moderator in this forum, doubtless silenced and removed by Dell.
