2405 High Pitched Squeal

Does anybody else have a high pitched squeal on their 2405fpw monitor? I just ordered one, heard a squeal about 2 days after recieving it. Then I recieved a new one, and it has a louder squeal than the first one. It's not a mind-blowing volume, but a subtle and constant squeal. I probably hear it more because I'm alone in a home-office and it's very quiet and pushed into a corner on my desk. I'm debating on returning it for a refund because I'm somewhat sensitive to the squeal. If everyone elses is super quiet, then I may just try my luck at another RMA if they let me. VERY ANNOYING! :-)

mect_net,

Hopefully, it will not be months before we get some information. In all honesty, I doubt that it will be in the next couple of days. I would hope within a week we will have something.  I can't really say for sure any exact date.

adam_garner,

Yes, the monitor has a 3 year warranty. If you have a problem with the monitor within those 3 years you can have it replaced. If you just have the monitor only and no service tag number on the monitor keep your customer or order number from when you purchased the monitor. They will need that number to identify your information.

Jesse:

For those of us that have a working monitor, but are wondering if the problem will surface outside of the 30 day return policy, what is the exchange policy/warranty on Dell monitors?

From what I understand, Dell monitors carry a 3 years warranty.  If anything should go wrong (such as  a whining noise) within those 3 years, we have the right to exchange it for another 2405 FPW.  Is that correct?

I just got 2 (yes two) 2405.
One of them definitely has a loud high pitch after about 2 hours of use. I can hear it if I turn off my music, and it's quite irritating.
I haven't kept the other unit on long enough to notice.

I read that Jesse said that Dell is investigating. Does that mean I need to keep my two 2405 until we hear back from him?

I recieved my replacement monitor last night. It was a refurbished unit but has no undesirable sounds or wavy lines on the component inputs and (besides the beat-up packaging) was in brand new condition. This tells me that Dell is possibly taking in the squealers, fixing them and then sending them back out to the people who are complaining about the squealing. So some other lucky person will get my original one.

Just got mine today. Manufactures June 1 2005.

Add me to the list of irritated ears! It's actually not *too* bad, but I write and mix music and am really sensitive to annoying sounds. Wouldn't be so bad it it weren't so high. May be able to get used to it, let's see.

So I could return it for a replacement in 2 years and 360 days? What if they don't make it any more?

Does anyone know how the 2405 compares to Samsungs SyncMasterTM 243T-Black (24" monitor)?

or the Samsung SyncMaster 241MP-Silver (24" monitor)?

Any squealing?

I know the ratio on both these units is 500:1 as opposed to the 2405's 1000:1

Does the high ratio contribute to squeal?

I have had mine about a week now and I can no longer handle the squealing. I would not recommend this monitor to anyone. I have used quite a few LCD's and none have squealed like this.

OK, so out of my two 2405 only one has the loud high pitch squeal.
The other one os pretty quiet.
What are the steps to make an even exchange with Dell?
Did you guys had to pay for shipping?

Dell paid shipping when I returned mine. The UPS man brought a label with him and gave me a receipt.

I bought one of these monitors on July 13th and soon noticed the high pitched noise. I then called dell(waited on hold for an hour) and had them send me a new one. This one works great and has absolutely no noise. So if you get one with the noise, I suggest trying your luck with a new one.

Just got my 2405fpw today. First hour was great. Now, I have the same annoying buzz that many in the forums have also reported. With this many people reporting the problem, why doesn't someone check for it before shipping. The cost of leaving the monitor running for an hour and giving a listen is surely less than all the shipping and lost revenue from returned products. Not to mention the incredibly bad impression of Dell products this gives. I mean this monitor is supposed to be top of the line. I also have problems with connecting a dvd player using the component connections. I get faint lines almost like macrovision is being activated (even on dvds without macrovision). Both flaws are annoying enough to make me return my monitor. I will start looking into it tomorrow.

Video setup:
ATI 9600 (at 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz)

Im just adding my 2 pence worth here as this thread is linked from quite a few places. I received two of these screens yesterday in the UK (27th July 05) with zero dead pixels, however one of them has the whine. It only crops up after an hour or so, so is likely heat related. The whine isnt terrible, music drowns it out, but its a pain in the backside and is the first time Ive heard any lcd make such a noise.

In the UK, the support was great, they spoke english! I told them at the start it does it on all inputs, isnt cable related or caused by refresh rates and they simply agreed to send out a new one for next day delivery, picking up the faulty one :-) Ill be expecting it sometime today....

If its any help, these were both rev A01 and had near identical model numbers so were almost certainly from the same batch.

I just received my 2405FPW and the next night I too heard the high pitched whine. I have mine hooked upto my G5 PowerMac dual 2ghz. I bought this monitor to use when I'm not using Photoshop. I have a Sony Artisan for that work. So I'm using this for general use. The whine volume increases if I turn the brightnes up. I normally have it at around 25. It definatly is a heat related issue due to the switching power supply. I'd say low quality caps in the switching supply. I can faintly hear the ballast tube but only if I put my ear right next to the edge of the monitor. I'm waiting for the Dell moderator to put some usefull info on the exact plan of action Dell will take for us owners of these squeally panels.

E DesRock. I had the same problem as you. Both the buzzing/squealing sound and wavy lines when using the component connections. Did you receive your replacement yet? Were the problems fixed? I am also in Canada. Can you tell me who you contacted?
