Dell 2k monitors
I have a 1080P Dell monitor (Yep, that's right, a 1080P!). I bought it at Best Buy about 7 years ago. Most of its lifetime it's been on 24/7/365. I've unplugged it a few times but most of its lifetime, it's been on, either active or sleeping.
I have a Mac mini so I want a Mac-compatible monitor..
For a while now, sometimes when I turn it on, I'll see snow or the desktop with a magenta background. When that happens, I turn it off & then back on again & everything is normal. I'd say that it is dying.
I've been researching the different brands. I ordered a 27 inch 4K non-Dell brand from Best Buy to try out. I basically like it but the text at 4K is so tiny! The brand is Mac-compatible but I have the resolution set on 2K. I don't want to pay for a 4K monitor & set the resolution at 2K. So, I'm reshopping for a 2K monitor.
On the Best Buy website, the OS compatibility is listed as either a dash or "Not applicable" or the OSes are listed like Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. I wonder what "Not applicable" means. I have a Mac but I want to try out Linux.
I'm gonna browse around the Dell website for a 27 inch 2K Mac-compatible monitor.
Then I'll ask for advice from you guys on recommendations.

Hi
This has a UK orientation, so please ignore it if it's not relevant...
For a modern 27″ 2K (QHD) Dell monitor that’s Mac‑compatible and will directly replace your current setup, allegedly, the best current match is:
Dell UltraSharp 27 Plus USB‑C Hub Monitor – U2725D (27″, 2560×1440, USB‑C)
Key points for Mac use:
Resolution: 2560×1440 (2K/QHD) at 27″ – same pixel density class as your current monitor, but with a modern panel and features
Mac compatibility: Dell UltraSharp USB‑C monitors are “Plug and Play” with macOS and comply with USB‑C/VESA display mode standards
Connection: USB‑C with DisplayPort Alt Mode and power delivery, which works directly with MacBook Pro/Air and Mac Mini (via USB‑C/Thunderbolt)
Features: Height/tilt/swivel/pivot adjustability, USB‑C hub, good color accuracy, and modern IPS panel typical of UltraSharp Plus series
Dell’s official Mac‑compatibility page lists the U2724D (previous-gen 27″ 2K USB‑C UltraSharp) as confirmed Mac‑compatible, and the U2725QE (4K) as well; the U2725D is the natural 2K successor in the same line.
If you can’t find the U2725D in the UK right now, the closely related Dell UltraSharp 27 U2724D (2K, USB‑C) is also explicitly listed as Mac‑compatible and widely available as a modern 2K option.
You can verify UK availability and pricing on Dell’s UK “macOS Compatible” monitor page, which lists UltraSharp 27 models including the U2725QE and U2724D as Mac‑compatible options.

I don't live in the UK. I live in the good ol' U S of A!
I've noticed that there are Mac "compatible" & Mac "equivalent" monitors. The "equivalent" monitors are more expensive than the "compatible" monitors.
I've pretty much decided on the S2725DC.
I just had a thought. If I'm to get an extended warranty, it seems to me that a Dell extended warranty would be the best thing to do. Not a Geek Squad or some other extended warranty.
I noticed that there's free Mac software available for the monitor that controls the monitor. But there are 2 items. There's a driver & the actual app. Do I need to download both?
I'll check out the Mac compatible webpage.

Hi
I posted a link to Dell, north american continent, US of A.
And as to the rest of it, I know less than nothing about mac compatibility.
But I do concur with your thoughts on the warranty.

I've basically decided on the S2725DC.
I'm gonna start off with HDMI. My 2023 Mac mini has 2 Thunderbolt ports, so maybe upgrade to Thunderbolt/USB-C.
Is the USB port on the monitor for upgrading the firmware among other things? Is it also to create a USB hub? If that's the case, how do I switch from USB hub to Thunderbolt & back?
What are USB upstream & USB downstream?

What are USB upstream & USB downstream? They're on the S2725DC.
It seems that some of the monitors have a 3-year warranty & some have a 1-year warranty. Why is that?
What's involved in extending the warranty? Do I need to chose it when I order the monitor or do I have like 30 days to decide?

Upstream connects to the computer system.
Yes, the warranty varies by price class -- lower end monitors, 1 year, higher 3.
It is far more expensive to add a warranty extension after purchase than at purchase.

Does the USB-C port have more than 1 function? I assume that the monitor has firmware.
Can the USB-C cable be used for:
1) update the firmware?
2) upstream for the USB Hub?
3) in place of HDMI?
I have a 2023 Mac mini. It has 2 Thunderbolt ports, not DisplayPorts.
I'm sorry that I'm asking so many questions!
Does the extended warranty run concurrently with the factory warranty or consequently? That is, with the factory warranty at the same time or does the extended warranty follow after the factory warranty expires?
I suppose that there's an option in the checkout to add the extended warranty.

@dcs.79c The extended warranty will follow after the factory warranty. So if you purchase a 2 or 3 year warranty, then the monitor is covered up to 2 or 3 years, etc. The USB‑C port provides DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode with Power Delivery, so the maximum resolution is 2560 x 1440 at 144 Hz. Your Mac should be able to support this resolution. Using this C port does also indeed work as upstream for updating the firmware and enabling the additional downstream USB ports. HDMI will only be for video. You can refer to the full system specs with this link here.

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately, patience isn't one of my virtues!
As I assumed, the USB-C port is multifunctional. It can be used to create a USB Hub & update firmware & act as a DisplayPort. Since it appears that DisplayPort is not an option for me, the default would be to set the USB as a Hub & switch to update firmware when needed. How do I find out if the firmware needs to be updated? Do I query the OSD & find out if a firmware update is available or is there a Dell Webpage that has the firmware update to download?
My 2023 Mac mini has 2 USB-A & 2 USB-C ports. The USB-C can be used for video. The problem is twofold. My mini uses the Thunderbolt protocol & the Dell monitor uses the DisplayPort protocol. I know that I will need a Thunderbolt-enabled USB cable or a DisplayPort-enabled USB cable. I assume that if I plug one end of a Thunderbolt cable into my mini & the other end into the Dell, it won't work. Likewise, if I plug one end of a DisplayPort cable into my mini & the other end into the Dell that won't work either. So, I reckon that limits me to HDMI. I do have a 4K-certified HDMI cable that's currently connected to my Dell.
I wonder if there's such a thing as a ThunderBolt to DisplayPort convertor or vice versa - DisplayPort to Thunderbolt convertor.

@dcs.79c So thunderbolt is backwards compatible with displayport. You would just use the USB C cable that comes with the monitor to connect to the Macs USB C port. You will then get video and hub capability via a single cable. You can download the Dell Peripheral Manager application on Mac to manage updating firmware or just download the firmware directly and check back periodically for any new updates. Monitor updates do not occur that often so I personally wouldn't be that concerned about it unless there was some broken feature that needs an update for a fix.

Do I have the option to add an extended warranty at checkout?
I've seen the S2725DC on the Amazon website & on the Walmart website. Well, sometimes I see "out of stock" on the Walmart website. Amazon & Walmart may offer an extended warranty but I'm not sure. If they do, I wouldn't trust an extended warranty from either of them.
I think that I may have asked all of my questions. But I'm not sure!

@dcs.79c Yes you can add an extension when adding the monitor to your cart:
The difference between Basic and Care Plus is that Basic will only cover hardware support. Dell Care Plus offers additional software support. I can't really speak to the effectiveness of that but if you believe you need additional setup assistance then the option is there.

What's the difference between the Pro version & the Ultra version? The S2725DC is Mac compatible. Are the Pro & Ultra, how do I say it, Retina compatible? Is the text on the 4K Pro & Ultra bigger than the text on a 4K Mac compatible?
