While I understand that the display is not certified as G-Sync compatible, enabling G-Sync works, except while running via a DP cable at 144Hz which leads to random black screens. For example while tabbing out of a game and tabbing back in. After tabbing back into a game, the screen will turn black for a second before displaying an image again at random intervals. Setting the chroma subsampling to 4:2:2 fixes the issue, but obviously leads to less than ideal image reproduction.

Strangely, this doesn't happen when running via HDMI 2.1, at least I couldn't reproduce the issue in that manner anymore. Not sure exactly what the cause is, might be the cable, although I've tried two different DP cables with the same result and this issue has been reported somewhere else with the same "workaround" of running 4:2:2 being suggested.

We cannot know what might appear in the future. Like you, all we can do is check the G3223Q drivers page.

Reminder, the G3223Q drivers page does not show any macOS drivers. You should post the Apple TV issue on the Apple Forums.

* To what Windows PC model is the G3223Q connected?
* What Windows operating system?
* What video card?
* List all of the available video out ports
* How is the G3223Q connecting to the video card?
* Did you test all of the G3223Q video in ports (HDMI 1/HDMI 2/DP) ?

Hi Chris,

I've tried it with PC with a 3080 Ti, both on DP and HDMI ports and with an Apple TV to make sure it's not some weird Windows problem (I'm running Windows 11 Pro 21H2 22000.675). I've also found some other notions of this problem elsewhere, for instance the guys from rtings have noticed it as well:

The Dell G3223Q has an excellent HDR color gamut as it displays a wide range of colors in the commonly-used DCI-P3 color space, but its tone mapping is off. It's limiting the color space when tone mapping DCI-P3 content, and even sending a lower stimulus doesn't change anything.

To demonstrate it visually, this is how it looks, first picture is HDR off both in game and in windows and the second is with HDR on both in game and in windows, I'd expect it to look at least as vibrant in HDR as in SDR mode, but unfortunately it's not the case. The photo quality isn't the greatest, but hopefully enough to demonstrate the issue.

The cause of the issue is incorrect HDR color mapping. The HDR of G3223Q has an incorrect green color, so the overall color balance is poor. This issue will not be resolved unless DELL fixes it with a firmware update. Unless DELL resolves, PC users will have to calibrate themselves. But, Game consoles users cannot be calibrated.

avendiart,

What HDR compatible game are you playing on that Windows 11 Pro PC, RTX 3080 Ti?

That was Forza Horizon 5, but in general it's not limited to any game or video in particular, it's the tone mapping.

Does it also solve the G-Sync issues via DP?

I would hardly call it "best". After updating, HDR doesn't even work anymore on PS5. You can enable it without a problem but there is no difference between enabled and disabled.

G-Sync on my PC was stable, so I didn't notice any change.
I've seen some improved postings on social media.

It might be a bug.
Can you fix it by turning on "console mode"?

Is this a new firmware bug?
(1) Enable source tone map
(2) Display HDR content → OK
(3) Display SDR content → Gamma value does not work properly
