Precision 5540, U4919DW, USB Type-C, power delivery

@thehotline  Yes, but I wouldn't recommend it.  The Precision 5540 is designed for a 130W power source, which is more power than the 90W that the U4919DW is designed to provide.  If you try to power the Precision 5540 from an undersized power source, you will experience slower battery charging and reduced performance as the system attempts to adapt to its reduced power budget.

I know about the power wattage issue but it still should show a charge symbol and maybe a warning. I'm not getting anything at the moment-neither a charge symbol or a warning.

Video to the monitor is a non-event as well.

@thehotline  Ok, that's definitely not expected.  Can you start isolating variables?  Can you test that USB-C cable with a regular USB-C power source to see whether your system draws power that way?  Or with a different USB-C display?  Do you have another USB-C cable?  You'll want to use one that's rated for up to 100W USB PD and that also supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.  Both of those capabilities are optional on USB-C cables and therefore not implemented on all of them.

i'm using the usb-c cable that was in the box with the monitor. One would assume that it has the capabilities of the monitor. Dell tech support are checking this for me now via the serial number of the cable.

Will keep you posted on their progress.

@thehotline  Yes, one would assume the USB-C cable that came with the display would support the functionality of the display.  But one would also assume that the display would actually work as expected -- and that assumption obviously hasn't panned out so well in this case, so perhaps it's time to start testing assumptions rather than merely clinging to them.  I wasn't suggesting that the included cable wasn't properly rated.  I was suggesting that it might be defective, and that if you wanted to test that by trying a different cable, you would need to make sure that the alternative cable was properly rated, because if you just grabbed a random USB-C cable and the display still didn't work, it could be because the alternative cable was NOT properly rated.

yes, I agree. Both systems are still under warranty so now that tech support has taken an interest it might be best to see what they come up with.

I was just curious if anyone else had the same issue.

Have you had any updates on that? Is it possible to power the 5540 via the USB c of the  u49 monitor 

@Msid88  As I mentioned in my earlier post, the U4919DW only provides 90W, while the Precision 5540 is designed for a 130W power source.  So while the 5540 will be able to draw power from the U4919DW, it will not function optimally because it will be running from an undersized power source.  So you may experience slower battery charging and/or performance throttling, especially when running workloads that use your NVIDIA GPU, assuming your 5540 is configured with one.
