You have to install the chipset driver and video driver, than go back into Display Properties to reset the resolution.  You have not given us any information about your system in order for us to help further.  We need to know your computer model number, and what kind of video card you have.  Look at my computer spec's listed below.  Do the same for us each time you need assistance, so we have a start as to how to help you.  Dell has a download site for your system.  Give us the model number to your system

    Dim 4400
    2.6 Ghz 400 FSB
    1 Gb 2100 DDR Memory
    20 Gb hard drive 7,200
    Windows XP Home - SP-2
    Leadtek 6600 GT ( AGP ) video
    48xCDRW
    17 LCD ( 1703 FP )
    250 watt power supply

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_CEL_3000&os=WW1&osl=EN  This is the Dim 3000 download site for your drivers and video driver as well.

I had the same problem, I had to re-install Windows XP and I can't get my resolution above 640x480 with medium color quality.  I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I dont know where I can find all of the info like the guy above me had.

thanks, but  i have no idea what i should be downloading... i have a 15" flat panel monitor, model E15FPF, and my video card is an Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2... i don't know anything about that, i just looked on the website and i just assumed that it was the one that came standard, since i didn't change anything... but anyway, i have no idea what i should be downloading.  I called dell customer support last night but they hung up on me and i was too mad off to call back.
